5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book! A True Must-Read!
Ina May Gaskin has done it again. Full of information and insight, this page-turner of a book is a must-read. What a great baby shower gift! The book covers everything from the basics of breastfeeding to sleeping arrangements, to nursing twins, to what to do when babies get sick, to weaning, to eradicating nipplephobia and creating a breastfeeding culture. 3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I was expecting
I absolutely LOVED Ina May's Guide to Childbirth and will probably always treasure that book and its role in my daughter's birth. The Guide to Breastfeeding was alright. I agree with her advocacy for breastfeeding, but I didn't think it was nearly as informative as the Childbirth book. In my estimation, she's an authority on Childbirth and an educated advocate on...

5.0 out of 5 stars A slightly different perspective, April 30, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Ina May's Guide to Breastfeeding (Paperback)
Books about breastfeeding tend to be about the same thing - benefits, techniques, trouble-shooting. While Ina May's covers these, the devotes a short chapter to benefits, another short chapter on technique (though this has slightly different advice than others') and she does cover problems. Within the normal chapters, she does give tips and hints that I haven't seen in other books. The last three chapters also cover cultural issues that other books don't cover (Wet nursing, nipplephobia, and BFing culture). It's going right to the top of my list of books about nursing.

Nothing but the best from Ina May Gaskin. This book is just as expected. Lots of very useful practical information and soul supporting words for the mother to be, mother currently nursing, and the birth professional. I am a mother and birth doula and I really enjoy this book. A great gift for the expecting mother in your life would be both books: Ina May's Guide to Childbirth book and Ina May's Guide to Breastfeeding.

In my estimation, she's an authority on Childbirth and an educated advocate on breastfeeding. I felt like the publisher had her add some extra fluff in order for the book to be similar in size to her Childbirth book. The book is very broad (and could be titled "Ina May's Guide to having a Newborn") and I would have liked more information on the returning to work/pumping chapter. I wouldn't rely on this book as heavily as I would her childbirth book.

This book was amazing! Ina May really has done it again. While I enjoyed her "Guide to Childbirth" book, this one was leagues better. In this book, Ina May fills you with practical knowledge, the likes of which is missing in modern American society, and complements it will a range of science based information. There are also personal stories spaced throughout the book that are invaluable and enlightening.

This is the first book during my pregnancy that I've read from cover to cover. It WILL be going in the hospital bag for delivery and will be, I'm quite sure, dog eared by the time my child is a month old. It really has everything you need to find confidence that you're making the best choice, find info on WHY it's the best choice, and find that practical knowledge that will be necessary to succeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars The book every pregnant woman should read, November 16, 2009

This is the information and these are the birth stories that educate, enlighten and empower. Ina May Gaskin is a modern day birthing guru. As western medicine erodes our trust in our own bodies, Ina May brings it full circle and gives us the support, information and encouragement we need to be healthy, active leaders of our own birth experiences. Presenting only evidence-based data, she shows todays woman that natural, unmedicated birth is not only possible, it is also one of the most incredible achievements of any woman's life.

This is the second book by Ina May that I have read and I am in love! I bought this book to help me prepare for breastfeeding as I am expecting my first baby in May '11. I loved this book and could not put it down! It is full of helpful advice and problem solving techniques plus a lot information about the benefits of breastfeeding. Would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to breastfeed.

4.0 out of 5 stars a very good book that goes beyond the basics of breastfeeding, December 20, 2010

This review is from: Ina May's Guide to Breastfeeding (Paperback)
I enjoyed how the author covered a lot of information in a relatively short space. The book contains more than the average new mom seeking basic breastfeeding how to would like to know but is a great resource for the person that wants to know more.

I specially enjoyed the historical anecdotes and the home remedies for breastfeeding ailments. This is a very good book to have for a woman committed to making breastfeeding work.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Factually Accurate Breastfeeding Book, April 30, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Ina May's Guide to Breastfeeding (Paperback)
I am a labor, delivery and postpartum RN and mother of a 10 month old. I loved this book. It was factually accurate and provided information I have not found in other breastfeeding resources. In particular, I appreciated her realistic view of women returning to work and continuing to breastfeed. She had excellent information about the use of a breastpump and what to expect while using one. I also liked her more "moderate" view on breastfeeding unlike the the La Leche League's book. It was nice to hear a more moderate voice in the world of breastfeeding.

This book was also quite educational and discussed some rather fascinating accounts of lactation, such as women who were able to lactate post-menopausal and prior to pregnancy. I found this quite interesting and of value to discuss in a culture that seems to have the belief that lactation is difficult or unimportant.

The only section I was somewhat ambivalent about was her discussion about "nipple phobia." While I do agree that our culture is "phobic" of seeing a woman's nipples, I'm not sure that the label adds value to the destruction of this state in our culture. Other than that, this book was the best breastfeeding resource I have ever read.
