Book Description

December 13, 2010

I am the no prego pro, infertility warrior, bunless oven, can't-make-a-baby veteran. It has taken six years and tens of thousands of dollars to achieve this distinction, and more specifically, 1,611 prenatal vitamins, 78 fertility drug injections, 55 ovulation detection tests, 40 blood draws, 33 ultrasounds, 16 pregnancy tests, and 11 embryos to confirm it. Still, throughout this not-so-fun numbers game (I always thought that procreating was supposed to be much, much more enjoyable), I have tried very hard to look at the lighter side of our struggles to conceive:  Betting to see whose sperm count is higher and performing a strip tease in a hospital room are not things that I ever thought I'd be part of, yet here I am, willing to disclose the details of some very intimate incidents.

Whether a couple needs two tries to get pregnant or two hundred, most can relate to calculating menstrual cycles and trying to decipher ovulation test sticks. And there can be plenty of funny incidents and awkward and absurd moments along the way, whether trying to get sperm to meet egg involves candlelight and Barry White or Petri dishes and blastocytes. The Inadequate Conception tells the author's and others' real-life stories of trying to find two blue lines on a pregnancy test.

More About the Author

Lori Green LeRoy is a published author and popular infertility blogger (www.theinadequateconception.com). She is also a woman with a large pair of birthing hips and a husband with an off-the-chart sperm count who has tried for more than six years to conceive both traditionally and with the help of modern science. When she's not getting blood drawn or undergoing an ultrasound, she is a public relations and marketing professional who lives in Indianapolis with her husband and rescued pets -- two yellow English Labrador Retrievers and three cats.

She and her husband have been married more than 13 years, and are also in the process of trying to adopt a little boy from Vietnam (but it's not going well).

Despite being able to belt out a whooping 22 eggs during a retrieval and her husband's super sperm count, they have never been able to conceive. Throughout their quest to bring a baby into their lives, they have tried to keep our sanity and sense of humor and find the lighter side of infertility. Thus, she wrote The Inadequate Conception - From Barry White to Blastocytes: What your mom didn't tell you about getting pregnant in hopes that she can bring a little humor to a depressing and heartbreaking topic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny and poignant, April 27, 2011
This review is from: The Inadequate Conception: From Barry White to Blastocytes: What your mom didn't tell you about getting pregnant (Paperback)
So many women have problems with fertility, and it is easy to feel angry and frustrated, as if everyone else is having babies but you. When the author and her husband began down the long, winding road of fertility treatments, she realizes that for her, the only way she is going to get through it is by keeping a sense of humor. She is not making light of infertility, as it is a very serious issue for so many women; instead, she is doing what she needs to do to get by.

This is such a charming book. I know so many women who have suffered the heartbreaking trial of infertility. And each woman handles it in her own way. It is poignantly sweet to see this author showing humor to cope. Her stories are honest to the point of complete vulnerability, and bound to make you chuckle, but also apt to make your heart ache a little.

I love the frankenss of this book. So many women who have struggled with fertility will find this book relatable. But I can also see where the book might be a difficult read for women not in a place where the can see any humor in their fertility trials and tribulations, so keep that in mind when reading or recommending the book. It may not be for everybody, and that is ok, because if this book can make just one woman smile and feel less alone in her journey toward motherhood, then in my opinion, it has done it's job well.

I received a touring copy of this book courtesy of Crazy Book Tours.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blushing Truth, December 30, 2010

Filled with giggles and tears, The Inadequate Conception has filled a void in resources for infertiles. I've read many books focused on medical explanations and interventions and a few geared toward soothing a scarred psyche, but never have I read such an honest, authentic take on the bumpy road to parenthood. Ms. LeRoy checks her pride at the door and invites the reader to take a peek at her most intimate moments; you'll be happy she did!
