1.0 out of 5 stars If you love clichés, you'll love this book, if you want real humor, look somewhere else.
I couldn't even finish reading this book, it was so poorly written. The author uses cliché after cliché to tell stories that generally don't even reach the point of amusing, let alone humorous. I had to stop reading all together when I came across the word "canoodling" used in place of "sex". Who speaks like that? Is this the 1950's and I'm not aware of...

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny and poignant, April 27, 2011
This review is from: The Inadequate Conception: From Barry White to Blastocytes: What your mom didn't tell you about getting pregnant (Paperback)
So many women have problems with fertility, and it is easy to feel angry and frustrated, as if everyone else is having babies but you. When the author and her husband began down the long, winding road of fertility treatments, she realizes that for her, the only way she is going to get through it is by keeping a sense of humor. She is not making light of infertility, as it is a very serious issue for so many women; instead, she is doing what she needs to do to get by.

This is such a charming book. I know so many women who have suffered the heartbreaking trial of infertility. And each woman handles it in her own way. It is poignantly sweet to see this author showing humor to cope. Her stories are honest to the point of complete vulnerability, and bound to make you chuckle, but also apt to make your heart ache a little.

I love the frankenss of this book. So many women who have struggled with fertility will find this book relatable. But I can also see where the book might be a difficult read for women not in a place where the can see any humor in their fertility trials and tribulations, so keep that in mind when reading or recommending the book. It may not be for everybody, and that is ok, because if this book can make just one woman smile and feel less alone in her journey toward motherhood, then in my opinion, it has done it's job well.

I received a touring copy of this book courtesy of Crazy Book Tours.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blushing Truth, December 30, 2010
This review is from: The Inadequate Conception: From Barry White to Blastocytes: What your mom didn't tell you about getting pregnant (Paperback)
Filled with giggles and tears, The Inadequate Conception has filled a void in resources for infertiles. I've read many books focused on medical explanations and interventions and a few geared toward soothing a scarred psyche, but never have I read such an honest, authentic take on the bumpy road to parenthood. Ms. LeRoy checks her pride at the door and invites the reader to take a peek at her most intimate moments; you'll be happy she did!

I couldn't even finish reading this book, it was so poorly written. The author uses cliché after cliché to tell stories that generally don't even reach the point of amusing, let alone humorous. I had to stop reading all together when I came across the word "canoodling" used in place of "sex". Who speaks like that? Is this the 1950's and I'm not aware of it?

The book also seems to not really consider its intended audience with some of the material included. What infertile woman (I'm assuming the intended audience for this book) wants to hear stories about women who were pregnant and didn't know it, so they continued to try to get pregnant? These are not humorous stories from the perspective of women who are tracking their cycles so closely, they can rattle off their numbers related to cycle days and days past ovulation. The book also refers to an HSG as a surgical procedure, which anyone who has a basic knowledge of infertility screening knows is incorrect.

I picked up this book for a bit of humor and the only humor that I found was that the author actually got paid to write this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wish I'd found this book before trying to conceive!, May 2, 2011
This review is from: The Inadequate Conception: From Barry White to Blastocytes: What your mom didn't tell you about getting pregnant (Paperback)
This is one of those books I wish I'd read before I started trying to conceive.

Lori's story is, frankly, mind-blowing, and yet, she manages to find humor in all of this, something I stopped doing within the first couple of years of my journey. And even though she ultimately gave up trying to conceive, she was able to gather funny stories from her own experience and that of others, and find a lighthearted way to share them in her book.

I really applaud Lori, for her courage. It's not easy to find the funny side of infertility, even when so much of what we put ourselves through is utterly ridiculous. And yet, having been on this journey myself, I couldn't help but read between the lines and see the hurt behind Lori's laughter. Had I read the book without my own experience. I would have appreciated her attitude and her determination to maintain her sense of humor - something that would have been very valuable to me.

Since stopping her fertility treatments, Lori and her husband have embarked on a journey to adopt a little boy. I wish her the very best of good fortune and trust that her wicked sense of humor continues to serve her well.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Inadequate Conception, February 9, 2011

This review is from: The Inadequate Conception: From Barry White to Blastocytes: What your mom didn't tell you about getting pregnant (Paperback)
Very light, easy reading on a very sensitive subject.

I learned so much about what women (and men) go through with fertility treatments. Lori doesn't hold back, and shares with sensitivity and humor.

And she's qualified to write about it. To quote Lori, she has had "1,611 prenatal vitamins, 78 fertility drug injections, 55 ovulation detection tests, 40 blood draws, 33 ultrasounds, 16 pregnancy tests and 11 embryos."

I highly recommend this book to read or to give as a gift for anyone struggling to become pregnant.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun read, February 8, 2011
This review is from: The Inadequate Conception: From Barry White to Blastocytes: What your mom didn't tell you about getting pregnant (Paperback)
This is a fun book. The subject: couples who are "fertility challenged" yet still trying for parenthood, might seem a bit daunting, especially for those of us who have chosen not to have children, but Lori Green LeRoy has a way with words and storytelling that kept me not just interested but entertained as well.

Via a collection of anecdotes woven through the story of her experiences, the author allows the reader a brief insight into the drama, pain and yes, humor of the fertility treatment world. She freely shares her struggles and laughter as well as those of people she's met on her journey.

The Inadequate Conception had me marveling at the options science and old wife's tales offer couples who would do (almost) anything for a child, chuckling at the situations that result when they try to execute those options and mourning the sometimes disappointing results.

Fun, interesting, enlightening but most importantly a very real book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like a great girlfriends' conversation, January 17, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Reading this book was like the candid conversations I wish I could have had with girlfriends when my husband and I were dealing with our infertility issues. The few short conversations I did have with girlfriends were helpful and therapeutic - just like the book. Lori's narrative is honest, straightforward and a funny look at all of the trials and tribulations. I could relate to many of the stories she shares from her own experiences and from others going through the same issues. It's a must read for anyone who's dealing with infertility -- primary or secondary.

5.0 out of 5 stars Humorous, Honest and Heartfelt, January 12, 2011
This review is from: The Inadequate Conception: From Barry White to Blastocytes: What your mom didn't tell you about getting pregnant (Paperback)
Anyone who has experienced infertility (myself included), will find the humor and honesty in this book a welcome change from the scientific jargon in most books that attempt to coach you through the struggle of infertility. Leroy isn't afraid to be vulnerable with her readers and it is this translucence that makes her book such a great read. You'll laugh with her, cry with her and take comfort in knowing there are others who have walked in your shoes.

5.0 out of 5 stars a must read for "inadequate conception" candidates and parents with a brood of children..., January 12, 2011
This review is from: The Inadequate Conception: From Barry White to Blastocytes: What your mom didn't tell you about getting pregnant (Paperback)
Personally I was one of those mothers who caused discomfort and jealousy in this book...I plopped out babies on the first tries. I read this book to better understand the nightmare some of my friends were going through trying to conceive. I recommend that EVERYONE should read this bookThe Inadequate Conception: From Barry White to Blastocytes: What your mom didn't tell you about getting pregnant! It will help parents like Lori and Nick keep smiles on their faces while going through the process and it will educate parents like me to be more understanding, have more tact, and appreciate how very blessed we are to have children. I believe that those parents who read this book and are trying to conceive will have better luck with a conception because of all the stress reducing laughter it will provide!!!
