When an appeals court sets aside a verdict declaring real estate developer Roberto Morales guilty of raping and murdering his girlfriend, the retrial falls to Manhattan assistant DA Joe Estrada. Determined to build a solid case, Estrada is hampered by the three-year interval since the first conviction. The trail is cold, witnesses prove reluctant to testify a second time, the Hispanic community resents its greatest success story's being put on trial and Estrada himself begins to have doubts about Morales's guilt. If Friedman's insistence on day-to-day doings occasionally undercuts his novel's sense of drama and consequence, it also invests his story with authority, allowing a clear portrait of the give-and-take of the legal system and affording an even stronger sense of the ambiguities that arise from the pursuit of justice. Having grown somewhat disillusioned with the recent works by Grisham, I decided to look elsewhere in the lawyer-based genre. Friedman's Inadmissible Evidence met the need. In the story, Manhattan assistant DA Joe Estrada is called upon to retry a murder/rape case. Friedman weaves together a number of storylines that, in the end, lead to a compelling story. I can't say that it was a quick read. Nor did it necessarily provide edge-of-your-seat suspense. Friedman did, however, pull together a compelling story with sufficient depth and character development to hold my interest throughout.

I enjoyed the book -- particularly for its true-to-form coverage of the trial process. However, the subplots garble up the middle of the book, which made it difficult for me to continue reading. In the end, I'm glad I didn't give up, but I found it to be a frustrating read at times.

Joe Estrada has been given the case of a lifetime. As a prosecutor for New York City, he must see to it that Roberto Morales, community hero, must not escape justice for murder.Battling courtroom angst, personal issues, and racial tensions, Joe struggles to get the ultimate verdict, even as his case hangs on inadmissible evidence. Philip Friedman pulls no stops in this engaging work of art. There is strong dialogue with first-rate legal bantering; the racial fracture mirrors the OJ case. Enthusiasts of legal action will find Inadmissible Evidence a delectable treat.
