Editorial Reviews

Review

"For the first time ever, the principle of tulkus, or incarnations —such a vitally important part of the Buddhist tradition of Tibet —is explained with exceptional clarity and in fascinating detail. A jewel of a book from Tulku Thondup Rinpoche, one of our best living writers on Tibetan Buddhism." —Sogyal Rinpoche, author of The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying

About the Author

Tulku Thondup Rinpoche was born in East Tibet and was recognized to be a tulku at age five. He studied at Tibet’s famed Dodrupchen Monastery, settling in India in 1958 and teaching for many years in its universities. He came to the United States in 1980 as a visiting scholar at Harvard University.  For the past three decades he has lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he writes, translates, and teaches under the auspices of the Buddhayana Foundation. His numerous books include The Healing Power of Mind, which has now been published in eighteen languages, and Boundless Healing, which has been published in eleven languages.

Format: Paperback
Tulku Thondup Rinpoche's book "Incarnation" is written and organized in such a way that we normal individuals can begin to understand the tulku tradition, that there are different types of tulkus and the ways of discovering tulkus. The book is informative, and also left me thinking and rethinking. It is also a real treat to see photos of many great masters and to read short stories of their display of miracles, as well as the personal experiences of Tulku Thondup Rinpoche.

Format: Paperback
Anything written by Tulku Thondup Rinpoche, an erudite scholar and realized master of Tibetan Buddhism, can be relied on for its accuracy and authenticity. Incarnation is a unique text that offers a fascinating and profound explanation of the 'tulku' phenomenon of reincarnated and emanated spiritual masters. Moreover, it contains lucid, authoritative and beautifully written explanations of fundamental Buddhist concepts such as karma and enlightened aspiration. Beginners brand new to Buddhist ideas and scholars can both enjoy and benefit from this wonderful book.

Both fascinating and disappointing to learn about the tulku system. Evidently, like almost everything else in this day and age, some tulkus are not "real" incarnations of realized beings. Some are just the kids of people with money. Nonetheless, it seems that most tulkus are genuine and the description of the types of tulkus, their lives, and training is just fascinating.
