GETTIN' THE FUNK OUT,
By cd-heaven (ROCK CITY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Incense & Peaches (Audio CD)
Anyone who is a fan of Glenn Hughes outta get this. While I'm not a huge fan of Glenn's solo stuff, I had to get this because Richie Kotzen plays guitar on a few tracks. But much to my surprise, this is actually a pretty damn good CD for being outtakes and leftovers. I also am not a big fan of Glenn doing funk after hearing the chalk-board schreeching of his 1978 Play Me Out, what a mightmare to listen to! But this music, all funk music is very listenable and very pleasing to hear. Like I was saying, Richie Kotzen is on this along with a few other guitarists Glenn has worked with in the mid to late 90's. Songs like Down The Wire, Against The Grain, Stoned and Push are all excellent(not to mention all those tracks feature Kotzen). Another gem is the rockin' funk of Let's Get Together, and the take on Hey Ken, Are You Home?(whatever). All this music is from 1995-1998 so none of it is that old or dates back to far. Be on the lookout in the near future for more Archives releases from Glenn Hughes, because with music as good as this it's really worth buying.

Classic Rock-U.K.,
By Dave Ling (Great Britain) - See all my reviews

A meticulous stockpiler of his past work, Glenn Hughes has finally decided not only to share some of his outtakes with us, but to form his own record company to do so.As the bassist/singers sleve notes explain, Incense is the first of several albums intended to unite songs "with a common feel".Culled from between 1995 and '99,this volume represents Hughes' more soulful side, often in tandem with ex-Poison guitarist richie Kotzen. "Down The Wire","Jolayne","Doublelife'and "Jackie Got The Call Today" are excellent,laid-back, late night shagging music, and as Hughes rightly points out,the latter could have easily found a home on 1977's post Deep Purple masterpiece 'Play Me Out' If there is a grumble it is with the largely similar tempos, although "Lets Get Together"("El Gringo Latino Rockola Disco", according to Hughes) which comes on like Earth Wind & Fire, gives proceedings a swift kick in the pants. Sadly, it doesnt transpire to be recorded proof of Glenn's '92 liaison with the funk legends, but its a damned fine song nonetheless

As a huge fan of Glenn Hughes I had to buy this CD. It will disappoint Glenn's mainstream rock fans, but as fans of Glenn's music (my favourite Glenn album is "Feel") this has some real treats. "Down The Wire", with Ritchie Kotzen, is amazing and should have been on "Feel", and other standout tracks like "Lets Get Together" mark this as more than just an album of out-takes. There is some dubious material ("Ken Are You Home", what's that all about?), but it is a nice relaxing album to listen to, and shows off Glenn's voice for what it is. Pure Glenn fans like myself, buy it, Hughes rock fans give it a listen.

This review is from: A Soulful Christmas (MP3 Download)
First let me state that the other reviews are for a different Glenn Hughes album "incense and peaches" which is kinda hard to obtain these days. Now with Soulful christmas don't expect a funky or rocking good time since this album showcases Glenn's soulful voice with a smooth jazz sound. Ave maria and Noel are standouts as is this christmas. This is a decent christmas album and really showcases Glenn's dynamic range as a singer. Downside is some of the notes he hits can be a bit sour as. More time mixing and perfecting this album would have made it a perfect christmas album.
