OCCIDENTAL MUSIC,
By
This review is from: Incidental Music 1991-95 (Audio CD)
Guitar drags around pounding drum kit and trippy-dippy vocals that shout like an adolescent in teen-angst sexual transformation. This compilation of singles and B-sides is an entirety in itself with the loud rhythmic guitar creating a climaxing crescendo that rises and breaks in guitar heaven in the final two songs, "Forged It" and "Home At Dawn". Great stuff, and smart too! Superchunk's insights into teen wanderlust and adult misgiving speak to the teen in all of us and if Superchunk had their way they would crawl right back to babyhood and re-utter their very first syllables in the hope of charting a course to a less troubled but less tuneful adult.

19 song compilation of non-album tracks from the band's peak,
By
This review is from: Incidental Music 1991-95 (Audio CD)
Released in 1995, this second of three Superchunk compilations collects 19 non-album tracks from arguably the band's peak period. These singles, EPs and contributions to soundtracks (The Jerky Boys Movie) and various indie rock compilations date from the same time as the superlative "On The Mouth" (1993) and "Foolish" (1994) albums. Interestingly enough, neither of these two title tracks were included on its respective album, but instead released as a B-side (and included on this compilation). Highlights include the aforementioned two songs, "Cadmium", "Ribbon", "Baxter", and "Forged It", as well as outstanding covers of the Magnetic Fields' "100,000 Fireflies" and the Chills' "Night Of Chill Blue". Track 19 starts with a minute of silence, then 20 seconds of feedback, and finally an alternate take of "Precision Auto". I enjoy this collection as much as any of the band's regular albums and recommend it as a starting point for new fans.

there are some cd's that you listen to when your in a certain type of mood. some cd's you can't listen to all the way through. some cds you love, and then you outgrow. this is not one of those cds. it is fabulous. i've listened to it continiously for the past four years and it hasn't got old yet. yeah for this cd
