5.0 out of 5 stars OCCIDENTAL MUSIC, June 17, 2003
This review is from: Incidental Music 1991-95 (Audio CD)
Guitar drags around pounding drum kit and trippy-dippy vocals that shout like an adolescent in teen-angst sexual transformation. This compilation of singles and B-sides is an entirety in itself with the loud rhythmic guitar creating a climaxing crescendo that rises and breaks in guitar heaven in the final two songs, "Forged It" and "Home At Dawn". Great stuff, and smart too! Superchunk's insights into teen wanderlust and adult misgiving speak to the teen in all of us and if Superchunk had their way they would crawl right back to babyhood and re-utter their very first syllables in the hope of charting a course to a less troubled but less tuneful adult.

5.0 out of 5 stars 19 song compilation of non-album tracks from the band's peak, January 22, 2010
By
This review is from: Incidental Music 1991-95 (Audio CD)
Released in 1995, this second of three Superchunk compilations collects 19 non-album tracks from arguably the band's peak period. These singles, EPs and contributions to soundtracks (The Jerky Boys Movie) and various indie rock compilations date from the same time as the superlative "On The Mouth" (1993) and "Foolish" (1994) albums. Interestingly enough, neither of these two title tracks were included on its respective album, but instead released as a B-side (and included on this compilation). Highlights include the aforementioned two songs, "Cadmium", "Ribbon", "Baxter", and "Forged It", as well as outstanding covers of the Magnetic Fields' "100,000 Fireflies" and the Chills' "Night Of Chill Blue". Track 19 starts with a minute of silence, then 20 seconds of feedback, and finally an alternate take of "Precision Auto". I enjoy this collection as much as any of the band's regular albums and recommend it as a starting point for new fans.

there are some cd's that you listen to when your in a certain type of mood. some cd's you can't listen to all the way through. some cds you love, and then you outgrow. this is not one of those cds. it is fabulous. i've listened to it continiously for the past four years and it hasn't got old yet. yeah for this cd

5.0 out of 5 stars If only all bands' outakes were this good, January 31, 2000

Superchunk's b-sides, rarities, compliation tracks, and outtakes are better than just about any bands regular released material.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite SUPERCHUNK record of 20 I own., November 13, 2005
This review is from: Incidental Music 1991-95 (Audio CD)
This is the second of three albums they released that collected most of the spare songs they had released say on compilations or singles or went unreleased. For me, this is the best of them and, actually, the best record they've done so far. Given that they did their last great record (to these ears) in 1997, indoor living, this is probably the best record they'll ever do. It sure doesn't sound like something thrown together. It fits well as an album. Here's their 2 guitar, nice vocals, sometimes even emotional song writing with music that drives the pleasure. The guitars being the main source of that pleasure. I hear some GLENN BRANCA guitar orchestra sound on occasion. It's how resonant they get their guitars to sound together. I really like 17 of 19 songs here. It's the highest percentage of high quality songs on one album they have despite the fact that there's more songs here than their average length album. Some songs have a NEIL YOUNG guitar flavor. I've looked for other indie rock groups that can deliver so much guitar power with very enjoyable vocals sometimes with two band members singing. The 19th song, hidden track, just let it play for 100 seconds and it starts up. Nice re-mix of Precision Auto. Amazing how different a song can sound when someone re-mixes it. Sounds louder and bassier. I'm glad I bought the other SUPERCHUNK records cuz now I know this one is just loaded with high quality indie guitar rock songs. Thanks SUPERCHUNK. chrisbct@hotmail.com

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic collection from my new favorite band, May 26, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Incidental Music 1991-95 (Audio CD)
Why didn't I discover this band sooner? Well, at least they're still together and making great music. This collection of songs from several years back is as great as I expected after hearing some of their other stuff. If you're a fan of the band or even if you've never heard of them before, pick this one up. It's great indie guitar rock that doesn't take itself seriously for a minute even though it deserves to. I just wish "Foolish" had been on "Foolish". A classic album would have been even better. Oh well, at least we have it here anyway.

4.0 out of 5 stars b-sides and outtakes...well above average, August 9, 1999

superchunk: indie rock with brains and heart that loses no potency as the band ages. only these guys could make a CD's worth of b-sides and outtakes sound better than most other bands' actual albums!

this one's a lot of fun. highlights include "shallow end," a rousing cover of the magnetic fields' "100,000 fireflies," a pretty rendering of "throwing things," the pedal-to-the-metal "lying in state," and a goofy yet rockin' take on the motorhead rave-up "i'll be your sister."

i discovered superchunk back in '93...they provided an ideal soundtrack for my post-college years, and they still sound damn good today! check 'em out live for the full experience.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mostly very good but a few clunkers, December 28, 2008
This review is from: Incidental Music 1991-95 (Audio CD)
Superchunk's never been the most consistent band. But Incidental Music has more winners than losers. E.g., Foolish, 100,000 Fireflies, Night of Chill Blue. Must've listened to this about 100,000 times back around when it came out.
