Book Description

INCOME TAX FUNDAMENTALS has led the market for more than twenty years with concise, practical, and current coverage of individual income tax preparation. Whittenburg and Altus-Buller's text/workbook format presents material in easy-to-digest sections with self-checks, online quizzes and activities, multiple examples, and review problems. Income Tax Fundamentals is the perfect text for a hands-on approach to tax in many class settings, including four-year colleges, community colleges, or career schools. This text is revised annually to reflect the current tax law. Tax Preparation software is included. The purpose of the Whittenburg text is to teach the most important and practical areas of the tax law to students, using a building block approach, with feedback at the end of each section. By the end of the text, the student should be able to prepare a fairly difficult return containing many of the elements seen frequently by taxpayers and tax preparers.

1.0 out of 5 stars Simply Awful!, December 28, 2006
This review is from: Income Tax Fundamentals (Paperback)
I have prepared taxes professionally for over 20 years and have taught tax preparation for 5. This book is the worst I have come across in that time and should be avoided at all costs!

The content and flow is nonsensical, there is literally no explanation about ANY forms or schedules, and the sample problems are illogical.

In Chapter 1 the book introduces all the various taxable entities including Partnerships and Corporations, which it then tries to cover in a chapter each later in the text. Who in their right mind thinks they can cover corporate tax in a chapter? And what about that is "fundamental?"

Chapter 3 has a single problem that requires the student to fill out a 1040, a Schedule C for a sole proprietorship, a Schedule D for a non-business bad debt, and a Schedule E for a vacation rental. This is very advanced material for the third chapter of a "fundamental" text.

I could go on and on about how bad this book is, but just be warned: RUN for your life from this book and any teacher/professor who selects it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Text!, January 12, 2008
Have used this text for a number of years and enjoyed it. It introduces the student to the 1040 and all the basic schedules. The book contains copies of the 1040 and schedules plus worksheets. A practical approach to individual income taxes.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Income Tax Text!!!, May 2, 2008
This is an excellent text. I have used it for an online class where I rarely had to call the teacher for clarification. I also used it during the tax preparation season while assisting taxpayers and it was a great reference. I also find it very handy and very informative. The tips given in the tax break boxes and the columns regarding "Would You Believe?" are very interesting and are good learning points. The examples coupled with the self-study problems really cement the practical application aspect of the text. I have even written some poems about taxes while reading the text!
