Biography

Anita O'Day, American jazz singer, was born in 1919. She pushed the envelope, wearing coats and skirts instead of evening gowns, becoming a hip female musician.

She was born Anita Belle Colton, and renamed herself O'Day, pig latin for "dough" or money. She also earned the nickname "The Jezebel of Jazz" due to her ongoing problems with heroin and alcohol addiction and erratic behavior.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great O'Day!, May 27, 2002

Anita started the "cool" school of jazz singing - her vocalese & scatting is always musically right, and not just showing off. This album had a strange sound to it when first pressed on LP, but this CD transfer has corrected the flat sound that was inherent. Bill Holman's inventive arrangements propel Anita in one of the most creative sessions that she had for Verve. Anita was always miles ahead of her imitators, and always, the hippest chick in Jazz. And dig that groovy ice-blue eyeliner!

4.0 out of 5 stars Glad I bought it, April 10, 2007
This review is from: Incomparable! (Audio CD)
Anita is the love of my life. I bought her a drink one night at NYC's Phat Tuesday's where she was working. Yes. I showed up again for her on night two. I also heard Anita one afternoon with Oscar Peterson at Saratoga Performing Arts. This CD passes muster. Everything she does has to be compared to her "Time For 2 Cal Tjaer" CD
Go buy it, folks. She truly is the greatest!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incomprable, July 9, 2009
This review is from: Incomparable! (Audio CD)
I feared that I wouldn't find any quality Anita O'day music and fortunately was wrong. Of the many albums she cut in her day, "Incomprable" is as representative of Anita's style as one could find. Thanks to Amazon, there's no dearth of her music at very reasonable prices. I also recommend "Anita O'day Sings The Winners."
