This review is from: An Inconvenient Woman (Mass Market Paperback)
An Inconvenient Woman became one of my favorite books as soon as I read the description of the characters attending an upscale LA funeral. The author, one of my favorites, knows these people back to front and he writes of them with insight as well as scorn. Complications in the lives of the rich and powerful have never been so keenly described but Dunne manages to make each character complete. He can write compassionately as well as comically of villains and whores and princes. The character upon whom the moral voice is attached, Phillip, is mult-dimensional and always truthful. The story reminds me of what I liked most about old Columbo episodes. Apart from that, the story holds the reader at a good pace. You definitely want to follow all of these characters, who are real enough that we can smell their Bev Hills scents and see their tucked chins. I am always impressed with D. Dunne, who has such such a gentle way with his down-and-outers. I hate to see overdrawn characters and Dunne never does this. He takes the reader between the gutters and the mansions of LA with finesse, never allowing one or the other to take the stage too long. I will read anything he writes and I hope he never stops because he is a sure voice for our times.

Dominck Dunne's captivating tale of a wealthy man and his mistress is loosely based on the story of Vicky Morgan and Alfred Bloomingdale. Whether you followed that story or not, you will find this book hard to put down.

This has to be one of Mr. Dunne's best books. Having read all of his books, I think this is the best. It has many fascinating characters and true to his style, he definitely knows how to keep his readers interested. If you love Mr. Dunne, you will love this book.

This was my first book by Dominick Dunne, so I didn't know what to expect when I ordered it from Amazon. I was totally thrilled with my choice! Once I started reading I didn't want to stop. (The dishes waited, so did eating).

Intriguing & Engrossing ...,

It says this is a novel ~~ but reading the others' reviews, they say it's loosely based on a real story ~~ and to be honest, I really don't care if it's loosely based on anything because I didn't pick this book up to read up on the rich and famous. I picked this book up because I was bored and it needed to go back to a friend of mine. And I was not able to put the book down. Fortunately, it has been raining nonstop the last two days, so I was able to read it all. This is my first Dominick Dunne book and it really surprised me on how good it was. It was very well-written and very engrossing. It is steamy but it could have been worse. It shows a little bit of the world that the Mendelsens live in as well as the writer, Philip, lived in and the lifestyle of the rich & famous in LA and how they chose not to intermingle with Hollywood celebrities. This book focuses on Flo March, a young woman who was Jules Mendelsen's mistress. It showed the exchanges between those two, his wife, Pauline, his lawyer, and their circle of upper-crust society. It begins with a lavish party that the young writer, Philip, was invited to. After the party, Pauline's best friend, Hector, was found murdered. Jules hushed it up and that aroused Philip's suspicions on why it was covered-up, letting the real murderer go. And it all spirals downhill from then on for the Mendelsens, and Flo, who was caught up in the middle of it. It was well-written, intriguing and definitely engrossing. I couldn't stop turning the pages in order to find out who did what. The lavish descriptions of the houses, jewelry and the lifestyles, were interesting as well. I will have to admit to being a little bit dumbfounded though at the thought of why the rich and famous always need to have more than what they have. It seems like they're cursed. It was definitely a perfect rainy day reading material ~~ and surprisingly so. 7-11-06

This is one of several Dominick Dunne books that I have read, and definitely one if his best. The characters are so vividly written that you feel you are voyeur in the lives of these rich and fancy people.Dominick Dunne writes with such flow that you really hate when you come to the end of the book. Definitely a must read for Dominick Dunne fans like me.

Best Book Ever!,

First, I have to say that "HeyJudy" is wrong. The character of Flo March is based entirely on the real life mistress of Alfred Bloomingdale, Vicki Morgan. This was one of the first novels I read by Mr. Dunne(the other being The Two Mrs. Grenvilles), and ever since I have been totally obsessed with finding out more of what really happened. If you are like me, I suggest that you pick up Beautiful Bad Girl: The Vicki Morgan Story, by Gordon Basichis, who incidentally is the writer that Vicki was involved with up to her death. He was actually a suspect in her murded. Also, Dominick Dunne tells us all about that in Fatal Charms/The Mansions of Limbo. Pick it up, you will never be bored!

This is one of my all-time-favorite novels. The characters are so intriguing that they become immediate friends. The story is loosely based on the Alfred Bloomingdale/Vicki Morgan affair, and that makes this book even more interesting. The book is great and the made-for-tv mini-series was great. A must read.

I read this book years ago when I was spending time in LA. This is a great book. The author does a great job of character development and he invents a wide variety of characters to paint. Of course all these characters could happen in the adult fantasy land of LA. You have the kept woman, the prim and proper WASP wife, the actor who will do homosexual favors, as well as an assortment of scum Hollywood players. With a wide blend of characters, Dunne proceeds to create chaos at every turn while challenging each character's view of the different classes of people generated.Read this if you like stories of wealthy people, Hollywood, or murder mysteries. It's a classic.

Splendidly Scandalous,

Bringing back memories of Edith Wharton and Oscar Wilde, I found An Inconvient Woman to be one of the most brilliant and entertaining novels I have ever read. Mr. Dunne's descriptions are vivid, his wit is fabulous, and his writing style is unsurpassed among most American novelists. The glamorous lifestyles of the California rich are blended so marvelously with the seedy characters of L.A. The mysteries and scandals contained in this book are unforgettable, just like the characters. After finishing the last page, I never felt so satisfied after reading a modern novel.
