The big deal about this square is that the inside lip on the handle lets you set it down on an edge and it will support itself! No other square that I know of does this. Also, I tested their claim of squareness and found that it is dead on. A perfect tool

Look at where the red part meets the gold, there's a lip there. This lip lets you rest the red part over the edge of a board and it won't pivot down or tip over; it's a great feature. Because this tool is so accurate; I mainly bought it for aligning tools, which it has done flawlessly. Whenever I need a precision cut, this is the tool I reach for. If you can get over the price, you'll love it. It's dead on square too, inside AND out. Avoid the squares that have wood handles as changes in humidy change the squareness! Incra is hard to beat when it comes to precision instruments, and once again they've done a fine job.

Exactly As Described - A Precision Tool,
By Fred Anonymous Smith (Central Europe) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Incra GSQR7 Guaranteed Square 7-Inch Precision Square (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have used the Incra GSQR7 on several occasions (several friends have one), appreciate the design, and cannot understand the less than enthusiastic reviews. Did those reviewers not read the product description before purchase? The manufacturer made no claim about a "one piece design" tool. Instead, the claim is a single precision BLADE which extends fully into the handle area as opposed to conventional two-piece designs which attach a separate blade to a separate handle.
Did the reviewers not look at the picture and realize the handle grips, with obligatory screws, are obviously attached separately to that single monolithic blade/body? With conventional two-piece designs, the often separate grips are attached to a separate handle attached to a separate blade. For truly precision results with this tool, only the blade surface (not the handle grips) should contact the work material (same with the Starrett 20-6 and similar precision designs). This requires a minor adjustment to the average work flow (the blade tilted slightly with the inside of that blade used for marking). If extreme precision is not needed at any given moment, the tool can be used normally (blade flat with handle grips against the work material). This latter use will often still provide above average results with these precision-oriented tools. I have compared this square to the much more expensive Starrett 20-6 owned by an associate (a fanboy unwilling to accept anything without the Starrett name stamped on it) and found no difference in either accuracy or workmanship. The Starrett 20-6 uses the same single blade design, with only the blade (not handle grips) used for ultimate precision. No idea how "involving two dimensions" (the definition of "planar" mentioned by another reviewer) enters into this. And, contrary to another comment, Incra does indeed provide the applicable specification - "angular accuracy is guaranteed to be less than 0.001" maximum deviation from nominal at any point along the full length of the blade." This is the same specification provided for the much more expensive Starrett 20-6. Finally, a comment was made about scratches or marks perhaps caused by electrodes during anodizing. Absent damage or errors, there are no manufacturing imperfections which will negatively impact the performance of this tool during it's intended use.

I am the happy owner/user on the Incra gauranteed sqaure. When I purchased it I was suspecious about "how square" it would actually be !? But I must say it is dead on, both on the inside and the outside. The idea with the base protruding from the handle to keep it form svinging down is nice ! It is very solid made and will last for years. I has improved my work, enabling me go get perfect squares. Great for setting up tools.

Incra Precision,

Solid, precise, a bit spendy, but worth it. I have this one and the 45 deg. 7" model. This one is rather large to keep in a shop apron, but is excellent for setting up machines which is the main reason I purchased it. Get the pair. Set up your machines to be dead on. You wallet will soon recover and life in the shop will be good.

If you have a nice shop and want your tools to be as accurate as they can be then you must have this square. I am always worried that my equipment is inaccurate but now I know they are, and I can fix them all now and be certain that they are tuned to the precission that I expect. Only after haveing this square did I find out how much I needed it.

The best tool in the shop,
This review is from: Incra GSQR7 Guaranteed Square 7-Inch Precision Square (Tools & Home Improvement)
Having a precise setup is a must for woodworking. I have used this to square up table saw blades, jointer table, miter gauges and all other fixtures, fences and jigs. This is definitely a must and worth the money.

Worth the expense,

I bought this thinking it was an extravagance, but it's worth every penny. It stands up for squaring table saw blades and band saw blades, it has the lip that keeps it square against boards, the corner is relieved so that a rough edge on the wood won't throw it off, and it's built like a pry bar - you'd need a sledge to get it out of square. I use it daily and don't know how I got by before.
BTW, the guy who said that the box was nice was right - it's cardboard but has a form-fitting high-density foam insert that the square rests in. The whole thing has "serious equipment" written all over it.

A great asset to my shop,
By
This review is from: Incra GSQR7 Guaranteed Square 7-Inch Precision Square (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have no way to test this tool except to use it to calibrate my tools and if the woodworking job comes out perfect then I know this tool was dead on for what I use it for. I have 4 Incra guaranteed squares(5" square, 5" 45 degree, 7" square, and 7" 45 degree) and absolutely use them religiously to calibrate all my tools (table saw, jointer, planer, miter saw, band saw, drill press, circular saw, router table, etc.). While they are expensive I learned in an engineering class that you have to pay more for better tolerances and the expense here is well worth it over a cheap square. Yet there are more expensive squares out there and the Incras are "guaranteed" so if they are not perfect they will make it perfect. If you purchase these I don't see how you will be disappointed as they are one of the best asset you can buy for quality work.
