This review is from: Incra MITERV27 Miter V27 Miter Gauge (Tools & Home Improvement)
As a home woodworker I have always bristled at the prices of the high end miter gauges on the market and the low cost gauges always seemed to be flawed in so many ways that they were not worth owning. If I had an unlimited tool budget I would probably be buying the Osborne miter gauge, but that is a good $100 more than I wanted to spend. Since I have a nice cross-cut sled that I built to handle all of my 90 degree cuts, all I really needed was a decent quality miter gauge to handle any angle cutting or "nibble" cuts that I may need to make on the table saw. This Incra V27 gauge has been just the solution I was looking for!
Right out of the package this gauge feels hefty and solid. In use I have found a couple of great things to say about this gauge. First, the three expansion adjusters on the bar allowed me to take every bit of wiggle out of it while riding in my saw's miter slot. The second greatest feature of this gauge is its angle setting capabilities. To set an angle, the large black knob/handle is loosened counter-clockwise and then the small black rectangular knob is loosened counter-clockwise. At this point the "V" shaped angle finder can be freely adjusted into any one of the 27 pre-determined angle stops. After setting the "V" angle, both black knobs are tightened and this gauge is ready to make a tousand perfectly accurate cuts. Repeatability? As long as you remember what angle you used on a cut, you can make an absolutely identical cut days/weeks/months later because of the perfect accuracy of the "V" angle stops. The gauge even has holes pre-drilled so you can attach a wood face to it. I recommend that you do this as the metal face of the gauge is a bit slippery... wood on wood is always preferable in this case. Kudos to INCRA for filling the price gap between super expensive quality and cheap inferiority. I highly recommend this tool!

I wanted a simple and totally accurate miter gauge to compliment the more finicky sliding table on my old Ryobi. Looked at them all and thought this would do the trick, and it does.
Reviewers have mentioned that the adjustment system Incra uses is accurate, but difficult to adjust out to a wider than normal width slot. One even used heat to get that extra little bit. The adjustments are done with a bevelled little allen wrench screw which tightens down onto a plastic washer that has a slot cut in it. As you tighten the screw down, it forces the washer to expand out and it then all fits nice and tight. There are four of these adjustments, one being hidden under the handle (it is easy to access per the directions). The problem is that you really have to bear down with the tiny provided allen wrench and even when I put a drop of oil on it, it simply was 'way too stiff and was obviously going to break something. Hmmm, what to do? I was going to grab my wife's hair dryer, but I tried this first and it worked: simply loosen the screw a hair, put a little slotted screwdriver in the washer slot and pry on it as you tighten the screw. This takes the pressure off the screw and makes it easy. It slides very nicely with no play. I did all this adjusting while the gauge was in the slot and that worked perfectly. The V27 does not come with a fence, so you have to either buy an aluminum one or make a wooden one. I would have gotten the Incra 1000se which comes with an extendable fence and a stop, very nice, but my sliding table had this feature and so the simple V27 got a wooden one. I found a piece of quality ply (it is really hard to find an absolutely straight board) and made an 18" fence and used contact cement to glue on a longboard strip of 100 grit sandpaper. Note that the holes/slots in the V27 are really pretty big, so you either have to use a typical short screw with washers, or find some short screws with big heads to make it nice and neat. In the end, the this set-up slides nicely without wobble and is totally accurate. It is easy to change angles and the more common ones are provided for. The wooden fence with the sandpaper is nice and secure. This is my first fence with a sandpaper surface and it is soooo much better, really secures your work without the grip of death you need on slippery fences. The mounting part is bent heavy gauge metal, not something more exotic like machined aluminum. There was some concern over this, that it might flex. This hasn't been a problem for me. My fence would bend before the metal part would. Three stars because the adjustment screw thing is too hard. Bigger screws would be better, or some sort of bevelled bolt. The sliding bar should be longer so that the the device can be pulled back more on saws with smaller tables. Also, when the device is pulled back so that the handle part is off the table, it tips out of slots that are not the T type. And, if it clears the table edge, there is a step under the adjustment end that requires lifting up so that it slides onto the table. Why not make it all level and smooth underneath? Despite the annoyances noted, and they are annoying on something that is not exactly cheap, the V27 is still the best miter gauge I could find in that price range. For no more extras cost, Incra could improve this device, but I wouldn't wait for this. It does work as it is and I still recommend it.

I own two of these, one for the table saw and the other does double duty between my router table and sanding station. I could not find a better miter gauge for the money and neither will you. Very accurate and easy to set up and use.

I bought this today and was excited to set it up. I read the instructions and tried to adjust it to fit my table saw's miter slot. The instructions state that it will take a good bit of torque to adjust. Well, I supplied such torque and stripped the provided hex wrench. I had to apply quite a bit of heat to the bar before I was able to expand the washers and close the gap as designed. This did the trick but took about 10 Mins. for each of the four adjustment washers. This seems like a great miter gauge, but, boy it took more to set up than expected.

This basic miter gauge was a great addition at a very reasonable price. I can use it on both table saw and router table and it glides smoothly through the t slot. The locking mechanism is very secure and the knob gives an excellent control point. The gauge required no adjustment as it was factory square.

Very occassionally you buy something and you feel almost stupid because you should have bought it much earlier. This was how I felt with this miter gauge. I had no idea how absolute rubbish the miter gauges were that had been provided with my table saw and router table. These were both expensive bits of kit and I feel angry they were even put in the box. They were toys and I'd tried to produce some seriously accurate work with them. Futile!
I cannot say how different this miter gauge is. It is accurate and does not need constant resetting. It's not sexy but just does what it's supposed to do. The only criticism I have is the adjustments for a snug fit in the slots. This is made with nylon washers screwed down and made to compress and expand. Very basic and it works but the amount of torque applied made me fear the supplied hex key would snap. It didn't so I shouldn't complain, but I did have that fear. Stop playing with those toys and buy this. I don't regret it one bit.

I discounted this miter for some time as a second miter in my wood shop. The photos made it look like a light weight toy. I kept looking for a heavy Craftsman replacement for the one I sold with my old contractor's saw.
I finally took a chance and purchased it because old, rusty miters on Ebay were priced similar to this miter. My reasoning was that it was to be used only on the band saw, and disk sander so it did not have to be that substantial. The price on Amazon, and free shipping, was much better than the other sources I found. When I received the Incra V27 miter, I was shocked to see the heft of the tool and the accuracy of the adjustments. I highly recommend this miter. Look beyond the photo. I think if there was something in the shot that would give a perspective; a hand or tool; it would help. It may now just replace the miter on my new Delta hybrid.

I am very pleased with The Inca MITERV27 Miter Guage. When it arrived I found it easy to adjust the miter bar for a snug ride on my table saw. I quickly made a solid oak fence for it and a longer attachment of solid oak for cutting frame miters. Then I made numerous test cuts to check for accuracy and they were dead-on. Changing the angle of the cut on the V27 is quick and simple, but most of all it improved the accuracy pf my cuts. BH, Maryland

I ordered this gauge to replace / upgrade from my stock miter gauge. I had some doubts it would really be that much better, but "oh boy" - was I in for a sweet surprise. This thing flat out rocks!
If you have your blade square to the rails (see owners manual) - then you will L-O-V-E this gauge. It is easy to set up and dead nuts square. All of the standard angles are right on and custom angles are easy to lock in and hold. Nice - that's all I can say... really, really, nice. |
