5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Repeatable Marking. Best Tool Ever for Mortises!

I echo the words of the other reviewer. I use this thing all the time. It is the only measuring device I ever use when laying out mortises.

Try this with your ruler. Mark 3-31/32" from then edge of your wood and then lift your ruler, move your wood around and try to use the same ruler to make the same measurement. I'm not saying it can't be done, but...

I bought several incra rules for precision which these definitely offer. Beware, they are nearly paper thin and have to be held/used gingerly to avoid bending them. One more thing to worry about in the shop.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Repeatable Marking. Best Tool Ever for Mortises!, January 14, 2002
This review is from: Incra T-RULE12 12-Inch Precision Marking T-Rule (Tools & Home Improvement)

I'm not saying it can't be done, but with this thing, you can draw a .5mm line E-X-A-C-T-L-Y over the one you previously drew. It's not off by a "hair" or a "smidgin" or "a little", it's dead-on.

By sliding the "fence" on this t-rule across your edge as you make your mark, it's possible to make a repeatable and exact measurement from the edge of your board all the way down the length of the board in any increment (down to 64ths).

I stress repeatability because that's very important when trying to mark two separate pieces exactly the same.

Since this ruler came into my shop, I occasionally amaze myself, and that alone makes it worth the price!

5.0 out of 5 stars Most used marking and measuring tool in my shop, August 2, 2001

This was the first Incra product I ever owned. After a year, I realize this is the most used tool in my shop. It is well made. The lines and numbering are very fine and clear to read and the holes at 1/64th inch intervals and slots at 1/32nd intervals suitable for all kinds of marking with pencil or scribe knife. The end of the rule is calibrated or can be calibrated easily, so I can use it as a square for outter corners too. The stainless steel ruler body is thin but flexible and strong enough for various applications and eliminates inaccuracy from angled pencil.

5.0 out of 5 stars Accurate, Easy-to-Use Measuring, July 16, 2003

I bought this T-Rule along with Incra's marking rule and their "bend rule." All are terrific and useful measuring devices, and I use them on practically every woodworking project I do. They are accurate down to 1/64", and there are convenient marking holes at each spot. You can use these holes to make a perfect mark at the right measurement. Of course, it's up to you to draw a perfect line across that mark and cut it on your saw, but the Incra rule helps you put down a perfect mark to work from.

In some of Incra's brochures, they show a way to use the T-rule to mark your lines. You put the pencil into one of the marking holes, and then you slide the rule along the wood's edge. As the rule slides, a perfect line is drawn. I don't do this myself, but I see that it's possible.

The T-rule is made of sturdy material, and it is dead-on accurate. The rule portion is flexible but strong. It can slide along the "T" section, depending on how you need to do your measurement. There are two adjustment knobs, which you loosen, then move the rule, and then re-tighten the knobs. When locked, the rule is held down securely and accurately. (As an aside, the "T" also has that trademark red color I associate with Incra products -- it has a soothing quality for me.)

Although the rules are made of thin metal, they are very strong. I've dropped my rules a few times, even stepped on the T-rule once, and it didn't seem bothered by it at all.

One thing to be aware of is that the measurements on this rule are in 1/32" and 1/64" increments. This means you have to convert into 1/4" or 1/8", which isn't too much of a problem, but it is something to be aware of. It's a fine trade-off for such accuracy.

Over all, this is a great product that can be used in every furniture-making project for accurate markings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent tool!, March 24, 2008

I build dollhouse miniatures, and this ruler is indispensable. I bought it after trying repeatedly to cut four cabinet drawer fronts all the same size. Now I not only have matching drawers, the drawer pulls are all in line, too. The T-rule insures that all the measurements start at the same place, and the slots in the ruler insure they end in exactly the right place. No more time wasted lining up the end of the ruler exactly with the end of the wood, and no more time wasted trying to be sure to mark in the exact same space in relation to the line on a "regular" ruler. Worth every penny!

The ruler is a wide, very thin piece of spring metal that has holes and slots in it every 1/64th of an inch. There's a T bar at one end that allows you to put the ruler up against a board or any surfact with a raised edge and meadure precisely, using a standard thin-lead mechanical pencil. If you guide the T bar along the edge and leave the pencil in a slot, you can mark a line that's exactly parallel to the edge, and the meaurement is perfectly repeatable because of the accurately placed slots in the metal rule. It works exactly as advertised and the accuracy fully justifies the price.

A couple of cautions: The rule is very thin, so you have to handle it gently to avoid putting a permanent bend in it. You shouldn't put anything heavy on top of it. I kept the blster pack and I put the rule back into the pack and hang it up to keep it out of harm's way when it's not being used. And you have to hold the ruler firmly against the edge when you slide it to mark a line parallel to that edge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent marking machine, November 10, 2007
This review is from: Incra T-RULE12 12-Inch Precision Marking T-Rule (Tools & Home Improvement)
Just like the other folks say, this is a great addition to any shop. I find myself reaching for my T-Rule more often than most of my other measuring tools. I use a standard marking gauge to mark mortises but I use this tool to set up the gauge. The little holes are perfect for this job because the pins sit nicely in them and make repeat setups a breeze.

I am updating this review because I have had this tool for a while now and it has become one of tools I use a lot when building something. It is great for marking parallel lines. The ruler has holes at different intervals that you can use to be accurate (1/8, 1/16, 1/32, 1/64). All you have to do is place a thin enough lead and slide it down to mark. In my first review I complained about it being too thin but it is definitely strong enough.

The product was advertised as new in the box. The packaging on the Incra rule was opened, torn, tattered and stapled back together. Product appeared used! I expected factory sealed packaging. I'm astonished that this product was forwarded in that condition. I also returned CMT router bits that were damaged and chipped. Are we receiving seconds?

i ordered 2, 1 for me & 1 as a gift. both of us are very pleased. both packages were stapled, i think the packaging doesn't hold up too well for this item. i just opened mine at the top and have saved the packaging intact and use it as a "case" for the ruler, until i can decide exactly how i want to construct a permanent case.

this is a "finesse" tool. well made, precision tool. the numbers are ETCHED, not printed. the ruler is very, very thin, out of necessity, to function properly. the t-bar functions smoothly. This is not a tool for some one that tosses or slings their tools around. This is more for the precision craftsperson. some might call using a tool like this as being "lazy", i see using a tool like this as being more efficient. This tool, if treated properly, will last a lifetime. plan to order one with metric soon. worth every penny.
