Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-7-- Despite the excellent full-color photographs and well-summarized graphs of information, there are weaknesses in this book's organization and explanations. In a question-and-answer format that presents information in a straightforward method, pertinent questions are not always addressed. Acid rain is described and illustrated, but why it is dangerous is not fully explained; although the Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) project is described and illustrated, the description is confusing and the illustration inconclusive. The chapter on pollution is very good in its factual description of the damage caused by oil spills and leaks, plastic bags, and cans, and provides a balanced definition of pollutants. The full-color photographs amplify the text dramatically. However, although the chapter on ocean weather is interesting, it is marginally relevant to the uses and abuses of the ocean. --Frances E.
