A Bargain!, July 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Incredible Life: A Handbook of Biological Mysteries (Handbook Series / Sourcebook Project) (Hardcover)
This is a hefty, hard cover book full of very strange journal articles culled from the last 100+ years. It is endlessly entertaining and provocative- subjects were not chosen for oddness so much as to challenge conventional scientific wisdom i.e. the inheritance of acquired characteristics, evolution, etc. The book can be opened anywhere because individual articles are rather brief- it will provide endless hours of browsing and is a steal at this price. A further benefit is that it may shake up your thinking and remind you to keep your eyes open for the wonders that are occurring all around us.

Overstimulation to the Brain's COOL zone! (step right up!), December 19, 1996

This review is from: Incredible Life: A Handbook of Biological Mysteries (Handbook Series / Sourcebook Project) (Hardcover)
Well let's face it. YOU, my little cream-puff monastery door frame, YOU, my little applesauce
crabcake fish-halter, *YOU* my sweet dear little magic hamburger with a side order
of happy sauce----YOU have always wanted to see a picture
of a fowl with the facial features of a simian! Don't deny it! I'm sure it's
only a matter of time before an individual gene for this trait is isolated and discovered
to be common to all humanity! And this book features, among other freak-show laboratory mysteries,
JUST SUCH A PICTURE.
Don't get me wrong--there is only one reason that I don't think EVERY home
in America should own a copy. And that is PUBLIC LIBRARIES. Yes, I admit to
not owning this book because THANK THE GODS IN MERCIFUL HEAVEN my local library
possesses a copy. When I lived in Hawaii, though, I could not find a copy and
NEARLY WENT MAD LOOKING FOR ONE. So if you live in Hawaii, buy this book.
It is a VERY GOOD BOOK, so write a letter of appreciation to William Corliss.
He has gathered together some of life's greatest mysteries in an all-out
GREAT SCIENTIFIC BOOK OF THE FUTURE EXTRAVAGANZA. Featured are:
*descriptions of unidentified creatures of Africa
*an illustrated account of a person who shedded the BONES from their body regularly
*the odd history of the RAT-KING (must be read to be understood)
*the boy with a tail
*the Unicorn--fact or fancy
*many many more
READ THE BOOK
and
KNOW THE COOL STUFF THEY WERE AFRAID TO SPEAK OF IN BIOLOGY CLASS
Signing off,
