As hard as I wanted to, I couldn't get past the first couple pages,

I really wanted to like this book. The plot looked great, an orginary kid sent to a strange school where all is not as it seems. However, for some reason the author decided to write the whole thing in first person present tense. After the first five pages it just got to be too annoying -- like fingernails on a blackboard.
