Surprisingly good (mellion108 from Michigan),

Galen, California is a small coastal town mostly known for its remarkable resemblance to any small New England town. Most of the women in Galen are beautiful (or at least striking), and the residents just go on about their normal lives. Then tragedy strikes, and a young woman is brutally raped and murdered. When this tragedy begins to repeat itself over and over, even the most outlandish explanation seems plausible. Throw in the handsome anthropologist turned supernatural investigator, his love interest (the beautiful local newspaper editor), a dedicated but baffled sheriff, a gruff but loveable town doctor, and a rich but mysterious family with a secret history and a big house on the hill, and you have all the makings for a perfect 70s horror novel. Oh, and mix liberally with sexual innuendo, masculine protectiveness of female virtue, and loads of dreams, hallucinations, and flashbacks to ancient torture practices.I was lucky enough to stumble across this paperback. I really love these 70s and 80s horror paperbacks and tend to hoard them. This one looked especially cheesy, but it turned out to be surprisingly good. The writing is solid, and the characters are interesting. I enjoyed the story overall, and I finished this little gem in just a few hours. As the other reviewer points out, this was made into a 1981 movie starring John Cassavetes and John Ireland. They merely moved Galen from California to New England, but most of the plot remained intact. If you like old horror novels, this one is a must. It's pretty darn good, stands the test of time, and is well worth a trip to your used bookstore to find it.

EXCELLENT HORROR FROM A NOT-TOO-PROLIFIC AUTHOR[WHICH IS A SHAME,BECAUSE THIS BOOK IS VERY GOOD]. I READ THIS WHEN IT WAS FIRST RELEASED IN THE MID-SEVENTIES,AND IT WAS AHEAD OF ITS TIME IN ITS GRAPHIC CONTENT.IT HAS WELL DRAWN,SYMPATHETIC CHARACTERS,AND ITS MONSTER,THE INCUBUS, PROBABLY MAKES THE TRANSITION FROM FOLKLORE TO FICTION IN THIS BOOK.......THIS WAS MADE INTO A MEDIOCRE MOVIE IN THE EARLY EIGHTIES.....BUT THIS BOOK IS GREAT......I WOULD PLACE IT IN THE TOP TEN HORROR NOVELS OF THE SEVENTIES.......READ IT!

A book that stays in your mind,

I read this book during the 'Winter Blast' of 1978...and will never forget it. Time came and went, and with moves here and there, lost my original. I had forgotten the Title for a long time, until one day I saw the word 'Incubus' and it tripped the memory of this book again...which was good in a 'classy-horror-with-style' sort of way. It was far-fetched, yet realistic.
I won't give away the ending, but needless to say, if you like true 'story-horror', you will love this book...not too many characters to keep up with, a great base-story to keep you tied to the book, and consistent action and details...overall, a shame that the author wasn't as prominent as many lesser writers are.

I read this book when I was a kid and loved it then. I just stumbled upon it again in a book store, bought it, read it again, and loved it all over again. This is a wonderful little story for those who enjoy horror/thriller tales. Well-told with lots of description so you get sucked right into the story, which is probably not where you want to be with an incubus running loose...unless, of course, you're me, in which case: Bring it on, baby! lol
