It has long since been astablished that Jeffrey and Sara's relationship is haunted by ghosts from the past. Before, it was Sara's past that was causing a variety of troubles, but in the fourth Grant County instalment, we see that Jeffrey has his fair share as well.

The book begins with a hostage situation at Jeffrey's office. Some gunmen have come in and have left many dead, with Sara terrified and Jeffrey badly wounded. Lena is on the team, but she is hiding her own secrets. Having just returned to the police force, she fears she is pregnant by her abusive boyfriend. This takes a backseat as the story unfolds to that of Jeffrey and Sara's past.

When they are first dating, Jeffrey takes Sara to his hometown to meet his friends and family. Sara sees his family for the first time, realizing that Jeffrey came from a family and friend circle of bitter, angry people. Soon an accidental murder occurs, and Jeffrey seems to have altered some things at the scene to clear his childhood friend of suspision. Why? Why would Jeffrey, himself a policeman, do something so terrible as to obstruct justice? And the twists and turns are very surprising if not tragic. Fueling the horrible tragedy that their future marriage would bring about (partly because Sara could not have children because of her brutal rape years ago), it is discovered that Jeffrey had fathered a child with a woman from his high school years and was never told. We all have such dirty little secrets, things hidden away. But, no matter how much families and friends try to hide their mistakes, short comings, and trying to make everything look "right and respectable" despite their shame, the truth somehow comes out. It always does. Even the most adept liars can't go on forever living their lies. And lies, as we all know, aren't worth anything.

Pediatrician Sara Linton pays a visit to her ex-husband, the police chief, the same day two violent young men decide to storm the police station and gun down the occupants.

Now that is bad luck.

Author Karin Slaughter mixes this action with flashbacks from a previous age, when Sara Linton was being courted by Chief Jeffrey Tolliver. During this bizarre courtship, there is a murder, another decade old murder revealed, lies, anger, drunkenness, less than passionate sex, and more. Yet Sara stands by her man!

This weaving of past and present just did not work, even though there was a strained connection between past and present.

I had no understanding, at all, about how these two people found anything in common. And that was my primary problem with this story. Some majority of any plot has to make sense. This one didn't.

I'm not looking forward to any other book in this series, and with these characters.

4.0 out of 5 stars More thrills and chills!, June 10, 2008
This review is from: Indelible : A Novel (Hardcover)
In Slaughter's third book of her crime series about Dr. Sara Linton and Chief of Police Jeffrey Tolliver, she delves into Jeffrey's childhood and the early years of his relationship with Sara. She was smart to leave clues in her previous novels that add to the tension of this one: her faithful readers will appreciate having this insight.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Series, Good book, May 18, 2009

This review is from: Indelible : A Novel (Hardcover)
This series has been at the top of my reading list for a few years. When Slaughter came out with the first book in the Grant County series, I picked it up by chance and have been hooked since. She is a great writer that can grab you from the first paragraph in every single installment she has written. I enjoy the characters of Jeffrey Toliver, a cop, and his ex wife, Dr. Sarah Linton, a pediatrician. In this story we get to meet Jeffrey's family and friends. It is interesting to get to understand where he came from. As in many of the Grant County series, there is also a backstory with Lena, another cop that works with Jeffrey. Lena is a complicated gal and in this book she is with a guy who abuses her. All of this drama is entertaining, but where Slaughter really shines is in the mystery that she brings to each book. The first page of Indelible begins with a killer showing up at the police station. The story starts with a bang and never slows down until the end. I could'nt put it down and enjoyed it very much. Just the perfect amount of detail, a solid plot, great suspense and fast action. Everything I enjoy in a book. Highly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not good, October 31, 2007
This review is from: Indelible : A Novel (Hardcover)
I thought it was crap and tedious. Completely unbelievable situation and story and just got worse. Very American and seemed to dwell in stereotypes of middle America to the point it drowned.
