Book Description

October 1, 2007
Indentured Scholars, is a suspense/thriller that creatively explores the ongoing social dilemma of urban education. A long-secreted academic academy has been discovered by Synthia Godbold, an ambitious, yet hesitant, anchorwoman. The problem with this highly successful preparatory academy is that, for almost ten years, it requires total separation between child and his or her family. Disadvantaged children are propelled into intellectual leadership and financial success, but the social "trade-off" remains highly controversial. Synthia's investigative journey surprisingly leads her into the back offices and sanctuaries of African American business, church and political leadership. Even Synthia's own home begins to reveal its own guarded fears as her new husband must decide whether to support or sabotage his wife's journalistic efforts. Characters and conversations warmly explore the cultural and social dynamics that highlight the educational chasm of the urban child.

3.0 out of 5 stars Political Misfits, November 24, 2008
This review is from: Indentured Scholars: The Inner City Scandal (Paperback)
Indentured Scholars by W. Ivan Wright takes us on a ride through a political litany where parents are manipulated into believing this secret academy is the best there is for their child. While there appears to be an underground world full of brilliant scholars that could have been gang-bangers, drug addicts, or murderers, these people are willing to take your child off of your hands at no charge to you. The catch is you cannot freely visit or call them, nor check up on them, you basically are giving up your parental rights. Is this something that you are willing to do?

Underprivileged and poor does not mean we do not care about our children; we just want them to have the best advantages that are possible. But, once this secret academy is uncovered, who is behind the funding of this project? How is it possible that it remained so hush-hush after thirty years? Will my children remember me? And worst of all, are they really better off at this school and not with me? These are just some of the questions raised while reading this book. News Anchor Synthia Pearson is hot on the trail of uncovering the mysteries behind this school when she is faced with a shocking surprise of her own.

Indenture Scholars is filled with political issues regarding the welfare of our poor communities, preferably black Americans, education issues, and mystery. We are also privy to history lessons and some shady characters who try to make us believe that this school was created for good. I was a little disappointed while reading this book because the story lacked cohesion and it really did not flow well for me, however, with some additional editing I feel it would be a great read. I recommend this book to readers who are interested in the politics behind educating our youths.
