Book Description

Marketing, office planning, networking, managed care, legal liability. These are probably not the words that encouraged your decision to pursue a career in the field of mental health. Unfortunately, before practicing the art of therapy, most mental health professionals must first deal with the business of therapy. Independent Practice for the Mental Health Professional, co-written by a veteran therapist and a therapist just beginning in her practice, offers the information needed to balance the demands of running a business along with being a therapist. Based on Joan Beigel and Ralph Earle's previous work, Successful Private Practice in the 1990s, this book offers specific tools for building a successful private practice for the next century. Independent Practice for the Mental Health Professional provides the reader with the experience and time-tested lessons of one author who has been in practice for three decades. At the same time, the co-author, practicing for less than a year, addresses the thoughts and concerns of those therapists soon to enter, or thinking about entering, private practice. In this book, readers will learn: * the pros and cons of going solo or joining a group practice * the legal issues connected to running a private practice * how to market themselves as well as their practice * how to physically arrange their office, manage personnel, and collect fees * how to maintain a thriving practice in the age of managed care the authors cannot provide a magic formula. However, when combined with hard work and a business-minded attitude, these techniques can be a recipe for success. As a result, this book is a valuable resource for therapists thinking about entering private practice, beginning therapists, and experienced therapists hoping to reinvigorate their own practice.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction, February 25, 2002
This review is from: Independant Practice for the Mental Health Professional (Hardcover)
This book covers the basics of starting a Private Practice. It is especially helpful because the two authors come from the opposite ends of experience in private practice: he has been working in private practice for years and she has just started recently. The book doesn't go into any depth on how to start and maintain a private practice, but it's a great starting place to get yourself acquainted to what you need to consider if having a practice. Highly recommended as a starting point!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Help For Those of Us Contemplating The Field, January 13, 2004

This review is from: Independant Practice for the Mental Health Professional (Hardcover)
I purchased this book as a possible solution to all of the questions that I have about starting an independent practice in the mental health field. I really reccommend reading this if you are still in college or just starting out. This book provides a comprehensive view of the business aspect of running an independent practice. While it did not answer all of my questions, especially about managed care, it does really get you to thinking about the aspects that you need to cover before starting a private practice.
