4.0 out of 5 stars OK, but not what I expected.
ID4: Silent Zone was a very good novel, but the action was a bit lacking. The first few chapters were good enough to grab my attention, but after that, it was a bit dry. Overall, ID4: SZ was good, but I wouldn't read it again.

3.0 out of 5 stars ID4's version of the Roswell cover-up.
The first chapter covered the day after the humans victory over the alien invasion armada. Excellently written descriptions of the interior of the ruined alien city destroyers and the taking of alien prisoners kept me turning the pages to see what was next. The first chapter covered the day after the humans victory over the alien invasion armada. Excellently written descriptions of the interior of the ruined alien city destroyers and the taking of alien prisoners kept me turning the pages to see what was next. Alas, this wasn't meant to be, it was a just a lead in to a rather average tale of how Dr. Brakesh Okun became the head of the Area 51 project. Starting from the discovery of Dr. Okun's notebook in a destroyer (Which by the way was the plot device to shift the tale to Dr. Okun) the story then restarts to Okun's days in college, his recruitment and career at Area 51. The story has some high points with the "reading" of ufo reports that were very entertaining but in the end after I finished the book, I hope that there will be another book that takes off after the gripping first chapter (ID5 perhaps?)

5.0 out of 5 stars Must-read for any sci-fi fan, or a good book for any reader, October 30, 2001
Independence Day: Silent Zone takes place before the alien attack and is about research on the alien ship. Okun, a young and spirited scientist, gets hired to Area 51 to work on research. As all the scientists work, Okun finds a huge government cover-up to hide secrets, so work is limited.

Silent Zone is a really good book. Its plot is incredible, and the writing style is easy to read. Okun, the protagonist, is an interesting character (interesting is to say the least...) He was written to be cool, and he does come off as that, for the most part. He also can be considered a nerd, but he's still cool. The other scientists at Area 51 are also interesting characters.

The writing is descriptive, and that pays off to add detail to science fiction. That style also keeps the reader interested to read on.

The prolouge, which takes place on July 5 after the attacks, is one of the best introductions I have ever read. It is also very descriptive, and is sets a very fun tone for the rest of the book. Once I read that, I realized that the book would be a really good one.

I really suggest that you read this book. It is a read-and-read-again book, so I also suggest that you buy it. Read, and then enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Book for Sci-Fi Fans, May 31, 2004

Being a fan of the movie, ID4, I ordered this book because this book starts at the very beginning. We've all seen the movie, but I was curious to find out how it all started.

The book centers around Dr. Okun, and how he became involved with Area 51, and the trials he goes through finding the clues to the alien invaders.

This book is a nice addition to the movie, and can't wait the read "War in the desert."

If anyone has a used hardcover of the book Independence Day: War in the Desert, they can sell me, please email me at rking@king7.com

5.0 out of 5 stars A great time-filler!, June 12, 2000
This interpretation of the Roswell incident and Area 51 according to the characters in INDEPENDENCE DAY is extremely entertaining. The story charts the progress from college to Area 51 of Dr Brackish Okun, the longhair hippie throwback scientist from the movie. As his work into alien existence becomes more classified, he discovers the link between alien abductions and the forthcoming ID4 invasion. Some of the descriptions of the alien abductions are surprisingly plausible. Although this spin-off is not as technologically advanced as Rober Doherty's AREA 51 series, it is still well worth a read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, July 31, 2011

"Independence Day" has been one of my all-time favorite movies since the first time I watched it. And I've seen it several times! So when I recently discovered that there were two "tie-in" novels for the movie, I knew I had to read them. Upon seeing the mixed reviews for "Silent Zone", I didn't know what to think. But after reading the book, I have to say that it was fantastic! I finished it in only two days. I had a hard time putting the book down because, after completing a chapter, I was anxious to read the next one because I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next. It really had me hooked!

This book deals with the young Dr. Brackish Okun and how he was chosen to lead Area 51 back in the mid 1970s. The Prologue covers the July 5th, 1996 details of the aftermath of the attacks on Earth, with a Delta Force team entering the large 15 mile wide "city destroyer" spacecraft that was brought down by Randy Quaid's character in the movie. It's not until Chapter 2, set in April 1972, that we are introduced to the young Brackish Okun and his days at Caltech. Without giving away too much of the story, I found it very interesting to read the background history of how Okun landed the job as a scientist at Area 51 and the cover-ups and denials that he had to initially deal with.

I now have a better appreciation for the movie after reading both tie-in novels, although I found "Silent Zone" to be the better, and more interesting, of the two books, although "War In The Desert" was very good as well. This will now add to the enjoyment of the movie the next time I watch it, especially the scenes with Okun, knowing what all he went through in his early days at Area 51.

So if you're a fan of the movie "Independence Day" like I am, do yourself a favor and purchase both of the tie-in novels, read them and decide for yourself. I think that you'll enjoy them as much as I have.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's about Area 51 before the Alien Attack in the movie ID-4, June 2, 1998
By A Customer
This book is about what happened before the movie Independance Day. It firsts talks about what happens right after the battle drone crashed in the movie. The book is mostly about Okun's life. I liked this book because it has a lot of action and is very descriptive. Okun explains his ideas for the future.
