Book Description

August 15, 2003
The author ran for U.S. Senate in Minnesota's 2002 Independence Party primary, advocating a 32-hour workweek and dignity for white males. With this improbable platform, he received 8,482 votes, or 31% of the total, to finish second. In his view, the Independence Party can be a vehicle for a third-party movement that can achieve political dominance in the 21st century.

More About the Author

William McGaughey is a Minneapolis-based writer who has published seven print books, created ten web sites, and published a fast-growing list of e-books under the auspices of Thistlerose Publications. His writing career first took off in a 1981 book intended to support shorter-workweek legislation. In 1989, he collaborated with Sen. Eugene McCarthy on another book on the same subject. McGaughey has also published a book, Five Epochs of Civilization, that presented a new scheme of organizing world history. It was favorably reviewed in DAWN (Karachi, Pakistan) and Xin Hua Book Studies (Beijing, China), among other places. His Rhythm and Self-Consciousness, published in 2001 explored the philosophical implications of moving from a print culture to one based on electronic images. In the first decade of the 21st century, McGaughey made several unsuccessful bids for elective office, producing print or web-based narratives of those adventures. He finished fifth among seven candidates in Louisiana's 2004 Democratic presidential primary with 3,100 votes and, in 2008, received 22,300 votes as a third-party (Independence Party) candidate for Congress in Minnesota's Fifth District. Career-wise, McGaughey has worked as an accountant in the public and private sectors. He owns three rental properties near downtown Minneapolis.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thought-provoking "insider view", September 23, 2003
This review is from: The Independence Party & the Future of Third Party Politics: Adventures & Opinions of and IP Senate Candidate (Paperback)
The Independence Party And The Future Of Third-Party Politics: Adventures And Opinions Of An IP Senate Candidate is the memoir and personal testimony of William McGaughey, who ran for the U.S. Senate on behalf of the same party that backed Minnesota's former governor, Jesse Ventura. Very highly recommended reading for Political Science students, as well as political activists of all parties and reform movements, The Independence Party And The Future Of Third-Party Politics offers a thoughtful and thought-provoking "insider view" of the wheels of contemporary American politics and offers a persuasive rationale behind the motivational struggle for political change.
