Needed Practical Advice for Studio Piano Teachers,
By

This review is from: The Independent Piano Teacher's Studio Handbook (Paperback)
This timely book, written by an experienced piano teacher and writer, is a handy guide for private studio teachers. It might be considered a reference, rather than a "how-to" book, as it's principle goal is to provide resources for teachers to consult on a variety of topics. The danger with this choice is that the book will need frequent up-dating, especially considering the number of references to internet websites.
Particularly appreciated in this book is the approach that piano teachers are professionals and commanding of respect for their skills and education. The author does not hold back on discussing lesson fees and compares the income of piano teachers to plumbers, janitors, and other professions. For a more in-depth book about teaching children, see the excellent "Professional Piano Teaching," by Jeannine Jacobson (Alfred Pub.). "Practical Piano Pedagogy," by Martha Baker-Jordan is also an interesting how-to book for teachers (Warner Bros. Pub.)

Excellent book for today's piano teachers....how to set up a studio, including info on group lessons as well as a studio with the newest technology for students. Discusses how to communicate with parents, setting studio policies, business aspects such as taxes and insurance, and setting up retirement funds. Info includes how to teach different styles of music as well as how to practice and prepare for performance and more. Helpful for non-piano teachers as well. Articulate and informative.

I've played piano for many years but I am a fairly new piano teacher. I have learned how to set up a studio as well as how to improve my teaching. Every technique I have tried has been successful. I highly recommend this book.

I use this book frequently in being an independent piano teacher. It has helped a lot in my business and is great for someone just starting out. This book offers direction in all aspects as well as examples (musician resume, new family interview, etc). I'm so happy I found it.

I highly recommend this book for all piano teachers in a home studio or music school setting. Purchased it "new" online at a greatly reduced price. As soon as it arrived at my door, I began to read it almost cover to cover. The author offers valuable information, sample documents, such as policy letters, and gives permission to use her ideas and format. Years ago it was the James Bastian book "How to Teach Piano Successfully" (1973) for pedagogy classes. Finally, a new book relevant for today's teachers with more tips on the business aspects of running a studio!

This is a thorough and thoughtful book that focuses on all the aspects that help create successful independent piano teachers. I have chosen to make this a supplemental text for my piano pedagogy class. Upon completing this class, students will have worked through all the projects required to achieve MTNA (Music Teachers National Association) Certification. This outstanding text will help students in working through these projects and acquiring a broader view of what being an independent teacher is all about. Congratulations to Beth Klingenstein on a job well done. I recommend this book to all who seek to learn more about establishing their own piano teaching studio and pursuing this as a career.
