Independent Reading Inside the Box,
By Jan of MI (Ann Arbor, MI) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Independent Reading Inside the Box (Paperback)
This is a great book! It is full of ideas that I can use with my guided reading groups and my book clubs (literature circles) groups. The one problem I have is the size of each block. My third grade students were not able to fit their writing and drawings into the space. However, I increased the size of each box and it was much better. I was able to put two activities on an 8 1/2 X 11 page and that worked.

Have you desired some authentic, purposeful, instructional tool to hold students accountable during Independent Reading? This is the book for you!
Based on four critical teaching elements; Word Skills, Taxonomy of Thinking, Text Elements, and Reading Comprehension Strategies, the author Lisa Donahue designed meaningful graphic organization tools. The "8 boxes" incorporate all reading strategies with the ability to diferentiate to student needs requiring accountability through written responses. The book offers various templates to use with detailed explanations and grading rubrics for student expectations. I recommend this book as a tool that targets students individual needs at all levels in learning.

Excellent book. I have shared it with other reading teachers and they ordered it too. Great resource for independent reading. The only problem I have with it is the work pages are too small and have to be enlarged.

Quick and Accurate Monitoring,

This review is from: Independent Reading Inside the Box (Paperback)
Independent Reading Inside the Box is a well thought-out and developed book of tools for developing independent reading skills in students. It is appropriate for regular education and special education students. It covers all levels of Bloom's Taxonomy of Thinking. The activities given are short and skill specific; making monitoring and assessing a student's understanding of reading skills and strategies quick and easy. Although reproducible pages are given (four boxes per page), most can be done on the student's own paper. Good to consider if your school is conserving paper as part of their budget cuts.
