Editorial Reviews

From the Author

I loved working on these books. I took these classic rhymes out of their normal settings and put a multicultural spin on them. I have always enjoyed pushing things beyond what is expected. Have fun telling new stories with my books.

I bought this book in a local children's book store. This is my second son and I felt like I was neglecting his literary side. He loves the book. He rumples it, he chews it, and sometimes even looks at the pictures. I was so impressed that I took it to he daycare to show off how indestructible it was.

Although I do wish it had a story, I know the rhyme well. Most of the time with infants you don't get a chance to read the story anyway, so this works out to be less frustrating.

Hey Diddle Diddle takes a famous rhyme and puts it in a New Orleans setting with all animal characters. I believe I spotted a crayfish, so the featured creatures are authentic to the area. Like the other books in this series it's wordless, but the nursery rhyme is on the back cover if you feel so inclined to treat this as a story book and sit down and give words out loud to each page. I think it's great as-is just to look at, touch and let baby explore with his or her mouth.

Hey Diddle Diddle is my favorite of the series because it just has a certain flavorful style that I like, and there are lots of little details on the page to look at. I own five books from the series and will cut and paste a similar review for all five of them on Amazon. I started out with two books and immediately bought three more and my 5.5 month old baby has been using and enjoying these books since about 4 months old. I let my baby hold the book and explore it on his own and I don't do much beyond pointing to something on the page and saying, "That's a cat playing a fiddle!" "That's an alligator on stand up bass!" or something similar. My baby doesn't constantly want to hear a 20 page story, he just wants to hear my voice while he joyfully attempts to rip up the book.

Besides being a new mom, I'm also a librarian; formerly a Children's Librarian although now I work with adults. In any case, I'm aware of the importance of introducing the concept of books early on to get little ones prepared for reading one day and to teach them that books are enjoyable. For babies, that means getting them used to feeling a book (sometimes tasting, it can be hard to get them not to do that and it's how they explore), holding it and encouraging them to look at the pictures.

We have had a few of these Indestructibles over the past 3 years (Mommy & Baby, Flutter Fly, Old MacDonaldl Mary Had a Little Lamb); most were given to our daughter when she was a baby and she didn't pay too much attention to them, but enjoyed them from time to time. She has lately started the art of shredding board books during nap time, so we've tried to thwart that by only leaving her with an Indestructible. It worked...until we gave her this one (ordered along with 2 others). They arrived today and Hey Diddle Diddle was put in with her at nap time. An hour later, the cover was torn off and pieces were torn from within the cover. (Gotta give her credit for strength, I guess!) :)
We are returning it for a replacement, with the hopes that this was an anomaly and that the new one will be as tough as the old ones were. Aside from the ripping, it appears to be a similar style to the Old MacDonald Had a Farm illustrations, with bright colors and fun pictures.
I am giving it 1 star since its main purpose is that it is indestructible and it clearly is not (see photos).

We picked up two of these for our 1 y/o at a nature center gift shop. She loves books, but has a bad habit of chewing the board books to pieces and ripping pages from other books. She loves these! Since she rarely sits still for story time, the fact that they don't have words really doesn't detract from them. She will sit down and look at the pictures and then start gnawing on them. I've put the entire set on her Christmas list and will be handing them out to other parents as well!

My 6 month old boy loves these! He is very into putting things in his mouth and always wants the paper or book in my hand. Now he has one he can bend, chew on, drool all over, and they don't rip or dissolve in his mouth. Cute pictures and we bought 6, some for a nephew. My baby prefers these over other toys for chewing. After they are all crumpled i just flatten them out and let them dry and they are good to go.

I got this for my 6-month old after seeing another baby chowing down on hers. It's a great product and great value. My son really likes it - but not quite as much as he likes paper, which he still tries to eat all the time.

We received two Indestructibles books at our baby shower and they are fantastic. We didn’t use them right away, instead opting for some of the classic books we remembered from our childhoods. But, we quickly noticed that at just a few months old, he didn’t care a great deal for sitting patiently while we read. Immediately, he would lurch forward and try to bite the corner of each page. So, we brought out the Indestructibles books and he loves them! He crumples the pages and chews to his heart’s content without actually damaging the books. Pages may appear ruffled, but they don’t absorb his saliva, the ink doesn’t fade (or smudge), and they simply will not rip. Even the binding has held perfectly intact! (Take a look at the pictures I have included.)

The one con is that the books don’t have any words on the inside pages. I would prefer for the nursery rhyme to be written throughout the book – not just on the back cover. I also worry that allowing him to be so rough on books will teach him to do so with all books, but we’ll tackle that issue if it comes up. Because he enjoys these books so much and because they are both baby safe and such high quality – they are absolutely worth purchasing!
