Well-known teacher and conference speaker Warren Wiersbe adds another helpful title to his list of books with this compilation of Scripture references. Index of Biblical Images cites over four hundred similes, metaphors, and symbols found in the Bible. Images are arranged alphabetically and then further divided according to their context. For example, the metaphor of an arrow is used to represent lies, evil words, deliverance, and sons.

An eastern proverb states, "The great teacher is the one who turns our ears into eyes so that we can see the truth." Throughout the Old and New Testaments the Holy Spirit chose to share God's truth through metaphorical language, culminating in the parables and picture language of Jesus, the greatest teacher of all.

By studying Scripture and comparing verses that use the same or similar language in conveying God's truth, pastors, teachers, and serious Bible students will enrich and deepen their understanding of God's Word.

Wiersbe, the well-known author of numerous Christian books, such as Be Joyful and Be Resolute, has produced a new biblical reference tool based on the text of the New International Version of the Bible. The purpose of this index is to locate and compare verses using the same or similar imagery within different contexts. For example, the section heading "Debt (See Also Account)" lists scripture references under the subheadings "Sin," "Love," "Appreciation," "Retribution," "Reward," "Grace," and "Discipline." This resource has its limits. The section heading "Divorce," for example, lists only two references from the Old Testament under the subheading "God's Discipline of Israel." Where are the references for the New Testament? (Four are listed in James Strong's Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible, Thomas Nelson, 1997.) Similarly, only three New Testament references are listed under "Marriage," whereas Strong's gives many more. It is perhaps true that additional references may not necessarily deal with imagery per se, but it would have been helpful if they had been listed in italics for cross-referencing. Despite the drawbacks, this very handy reference for discovering meanings that might otherwise be overlooked makes a nice contribution to biblical studies. He has pastored three churches, served as general director and Bible teacher at Back to the Bible, and is Distinguished Professor of Preaching at Grand Rapids Baptist Seminary.
