This is an invaluable reference to all the characters who appear in English drama from 1500, when drama first appeared in print, to 1660. The book indexes well over a thousand printed plays. In addition to characters' names it indexes character types (Dwarf, Gypsy), nationalities, military ranks, psychological states (Jealousy, Melancholy), occupations and professions. The book is a revised and expanded version of An Index to Characters in English Printed Drama to the Restoration (Microcard Editions, 1975).

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is an invaluable reference tool for early modern English drama. Its value lies not only in the list of characters, but also in its complete listing of early modern English drama. The work is easy to use and has an interesting introduction, which provides information on how to use the work, and some interesting information concerning early modern English drama. The work is highly recommended for all public and academic libraries." Robert L. Wick, Choice

"...a valuable resource for character studies of the drama." Literary Research Guide

This review is from: An Index of Characters in Early Modern English Drama: Printed Plays, 1500-1660 (Hardcover)
As a student at St. Lawrence University, it has been to my privlege to have studied under the tuteledge of Prof. Sondergard and to have conversed with students of prof. Berger. As a student, I would observe that, is this books is anything like the way they teach, it will be a supreme accomplishment for all three.
