Book Description

March 1, 2005
Kuldip Nayar writes in his Foreword, It is more than history. It is a saga of those who have ruled and those who have defied. India is a land of struggle and sacrifice, of suffering and subjugation, where people have sustained their identity, their being, against all odds for centuries. Raiders came and retreated. Empires expanded and receded. Dynasties rose and retracted. India was conquered and re-conquered, destroyed and disfigured. But it has remained beautiful . Anthony Osmond-Evans has captured the mood of this endeavor and the determination of the people to achieve it in this stunning photographic extravaganza. The distinctive feature in this book is the perception of how time comes to a stop in India and how monuments and people span the distance of ages to give the same message of cultural unity and solid defiance.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Osmond-Evans' splendid photographs attempt to show India as it truly is: unique, bright, mythic, yet undeniably flawed; a country struggling to rmain close to its roots, yet tring to evolve into a force to be reckoned with by the Western world. He has also captured the quieter face of India, presenting the striking landscapes--vibrant and thriving--as well as famous sites and temples." --The Bloomsbury Review

This review is from: India The Beautiful (Hardcover)
For those who already love India or may want to fall in love with her, this large-format book is a revelation, with lots of eye-candy. One thing I love so much about India are the vibrant colors you encounter everywhere, a real joy for someone living in this black-white-gray-beige land of America. - The introductory text is informative, but not excessive; the totality of this book is in the photographs. Even though there is an explanatory index describing each photograph at the back of the book, I chose to initially just page through slowly, from beginning to end, and absorb the beauty and character of each photo (some of them panoramic). For my next time 'through,' I allowed myself to refer to the index when I wanted more information. It's a book you'll return to again and again, just to bask in its beauty. Even if you've never given any thought to India, this book will expand your world in wonderful ways ~ I highly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Memories, September 29, 2008
This review is from: India The Beautiful (Hardcover)
India The Beautiful By Anthony Osmond-Evans is a large, beautiful, coffee table book of full-page photographs of India. The acclaimed photographer was drawn to the magnificent pallette of colors, which subtlely change from one area to another, signifying to those who are aware, which people live there. The elaborate patterns in the architecture and brilliant hues of clothing, markets, and landscape are perfect subjects for the purpose of this book, which marks the 50th anniversary of India's independence. Travelers, artists, and photographers will want to own this and everyone who peruses its pictures will be enthralled.
