Book Description

9 and upLands, Peoples, and Cultures
Four new countries and nine updated editions have been added to Bobbie Kalman's popular Lands, Peoples, and Cultures series. These powerful and intimate portraits of countries use up-to-date information and full-color photography. Presented in a mini series format, three books per country ensures thorough coverage of all the important aspects. It also allows more students to work on different projects at the same time. Covering more than basic history and geography, students will be fascinated to learn about:

-- the land... geography, agriculture, transportation, history, industry, and glorious wonders

-- the people... unique customs, customs we share, problems faced by minority groups and women

-- the culture... modern festivals, ancient processions, food, games, and more

Explore ancient religions and other facets of India's rich and colorful culture in this newly-revised edition. Breathtaking photographs highlight the updated text including the marriage dowry now officially outlawed, the salwar kameez worn by Muslim and Sikh women, and a recipe for Indian ice cream.

Other topics include:
-- India's many religious sects
-- art and crafts
-- how to wrap a sari
-- theater, dance, and food
-- festivals and wedding customs

Taken from Chapter 9: Performing arts Magical music The classical music of India has a magical sound. Its three basic parts are the raga, the tala, and the drone. The raga is a series of little melodies played over and over. Each one represents an emotion, a season or a tie of day. In all there are seventy thousand ragas! The tala is the rhythm of the music, which is either clapped or played on drums. India can be called the land of drums because there are so many different types used in Indian music. The drone is a constant tone that is usually played by a single instrument. In combination, the raga, tala and the drone create the desired mood for a musical piece. --This text refers to the Library Binding edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bobbie Kalman's 'INDIA' books offer excellent geographic surveys suitable for libraries, May 22, 2010
Bobbie Kalman's 'INDIA' books offer excellent geographic surveys suitable for libraries where country studies are done. Each 32-page book pairs contemporary photos with plenty of facts. INDIA THE CULTURE surveys the religious and cultural influences on India, while INDIA THE PEOPLE covers family life, homes, village life, rural and urban living, and social issues. Both are fine picks for any library strong in India culture.

Excellent book for children that clearly depicts the culture in an interesting way. It might need an update for current day customs.
