Book Description

September 21, 2010 Culture Smart!
India is in transition. Since the publication of Culture Smart’s first guide to India in 2003, it has been transformed from a developing, third-world country into the world’s fastest growing economy. Today, a huge, confident, emerging middle class is exporting technology, brains, and enterprise to the rest of the world. At the same time, young Indians educated abroad are returning home to take advantage of the new opportunities, bringing Western expectations and lifestyles with them. The impact of all this wealth-creation, modernity, and individualism on the timeless values and ancient caste structures of India is beginning to be felt well beyond the great cities, adding yet another facet to the giant kaleidoscope of Indian society.

This completely new and up-to-date volume by American author Becky Stephen is unrivalled. It highlights the many subtle and not so subtle changes that are taking place in Indian society, describes and explains those areas of life where traditional attitudes and practices continue to prevail, and offers original insights, practical tips, and vital human information to guide you through the pitfalls and delights of this complex, vibrant, and increasingly important country.

4.0 out of 5 stars India- Culture Smart January 9, 2011
Format:Paperback
I have read quite a few Culture Smart books over the years and whilst they do tend to be rather formulaic, they also generally offer a fascinating insight into the country it chooses to focus on.

This book about India takes a brief look at the history of the country, before looking at values, customs, makings friends, family life, leisure time, travel, health and other travel tips, before finishing on chapters about business and communication. The chapters are broken up into bite sized chunks which makes this easy to read and dip in and out of. It also had various photos throughout, although rather frustratingly these aren't labelled so you know what you are looking at! This offers plenty of advice to dodge the most obvious social faux pas and should help you get the most out of your time in the country and in your relationships with its citizens.

This is pocket sized which makes it easy to carry and it is of a short enough length that makes it perfect to read through on your outward bound flight to India. I have always enjoyed the Culture Smart series for the insight into some amazing places around the world and this guide to India is no exception. Well worth a look in your India holiday/business trip preparations.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too much like Wikipedia June 14, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I had hoped for a book with a lot of cultural insights. Instead most of the book is written in "Wikipedia style". It mainly consists of facts. For instance it describes the religions and what the religions believe in. I could have found this on Wikipedia! I was hoping for a book describing the behavior of Indians. I did not get that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another well hi-lighted book! February 3, 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Get your highlighter out for this one! Nice, concise book about almost everything Indian. Does not go into a lot of detail on the topics, but it's a great little book to throw in your backpack or suitcase. I really like that it starts off with the history of India...a lot of travel books don't include that. Overall I am happy with the book!
