Grade 5 Up-- An overview of an ancient civilization and the world's largest democracy. After a brief introduction, McNair discusses India's geography, ethnic groups, religion, history, culture, and everyday life in clear, straightforward prose. Coverage includes a good discussion on the importance of religion in India and a historical summary from the time of Alexander the Great to the ascension of Prime Minister Singh in 1989; the section on Gandhi and his contributions is particularly detailed. What really stand out in this book, however, are the illustrations. More than 150 photographs--glowing, full-color pictures in the main, but also black-and-white snapshots, historical prints, sketches, and outstanding maps--bring India to life in a way words rarely can. Young girls in brilliant saris, homeless families on the streets, the sugar-cake facade of a Jain temple--the very juxtaposition of images communicates interest. There are many good books on India available for this age group. Sarin's India: An Ancient Land, A New Nation (Dillon, 1984) covers much of the same material with a slightly stronger emphasis on culture than on history.
