This review is from: India: Lonely Planet Phrasebook (Paperback)
i bought this book because i was about to travel to india and also cause i'm interested in languages. it was really only useful for the latter. it is interesting to see all the different scripts and compare how the languages are similar or different. i had a lot of fun looking through it before and after the trip.
however, while travelling i didn't use it once. for one thing, the pronunciation written out in roman characters confused me to no end. why didn't they use something closer to normal indian transcription, which you're more likely to see? even in interest of sound accuracy, it's so far from any other transcription i've seen to be utterly baffling. the other thing is that, while travelling, english and sign/body language will generally get you much further than mispronouncing foreign words. if anything, get a simple hindi phrasebook for key words everyone will know. |
