Couples are especially happy when a boy is born. A son, along with his wife, will care for his parents when they become old. Parents try to educate their children and hope that they will live healthy, happy and prosperous lives. Many children are now better educated than their parents. If a family is poor, however, children often go to work at a young age to help support the family. India hopes that in the future all children will go to school.

Bobbie Kalman's 'INDIA' books offer excellent geographic surveys suitable for libraries where country studies are done. Each 32-page book pairs contemporary photos with plenty of facts. INDIA THE CULTURE surveys the religious and cultural influences on India, while INDIA THE PEOPLE covers family life, homes, village life, rural and urban living, and social issues. Both are fine picks for any library strong in India culture.
