All On A Mardi Gras Day,

This review is from: Indian Blues (Audio CD)
f you have been following the HBO series "Treme", you have seen the story line where Delmond talks his father into recording an album that combines Mardi Gras Indidan chants with jazz. This album is probably the inspiration for the story line. If you haven't watched "Treme" and/or are not familiar with the tradition of Mardi Gras Indians in New Orleans, just let the chants roll over, under and through you. You won't understand a word, don't even try, just listen to the spirit. Then you'll get Donald Harrison, Jr., himself an Indian Chief and jazz musician, mixing it up.
Donald Harrison, Jr. has covered a lot of musical territory in his career, from playing with Jack McDuff, Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Terence Blanchard and Don Pullen in the 1980s, to playing with the re-formed Headhunters band in the 1990s, to charting hits in the smooth jazz category with his group Donald Harrison Electric Band, to performing as a producer, singer and rapper in the traditional Afro-New Orleans Culture and Hiphop genres with his group, The New Sounds of Mardi Gras. Indian Blues defies a formal categorization. It is "modern" jazz, along with the New Orleans style piano of Dr. John, along with traditional songs of the Indians. Did I hear someone say "gumbo"? Yah, you right. Indian Blues |
