Indian Dancers Coloring Book

This will be the third copy of this same book I've purchased for my 5 year old son this year(and I'm also going to purchase the others by Oscar Branson (drawings by Connie Asch)) My son loves this coloring book and has completely colored 2 previous ones (same title, mind you!!) from front to back.

It's what I would call a "color-by-the-numbers" book. Each picture is color coded with 13 different colors so the finished product is an authentic Indian dancer.

Colored pencils work best since some of the detail is too small for crayons unless they are sharp! And since my son can't read the colors yet (but he's leaning quickly also thanks to this book!) I color code the "key" (given on each page of the book) for him with the right colors. He then finds the corresponding number on the Indian dancer and colors it! Simple!!

The only "critizism" that I have is that the numbers are sometimes hard to see or hard to read because they blend in with some of the features of the drawing.(Is it a "one" or just the line in his feather headdress??). But I told my son to just color those areas as he thought they should be colored or to see how other areas of the picture are colored and to use his best judgment. It actually works to his benefit because he has to study the drawing to see if, for instance, the other arm is to be colored brown also because the book assumes that you know that if one is colored one color, the other part should be colored the same.

But other than that the drawings are great for coloring. Perfect for color pencils. The lines are thick enough to be seen and not strain young (or old) eyes and are thin enough to not interfer with the finished picture.

There are all sorts of Indian dancers from Aztec to Zuni, includes Kiowa, Nez Perce, Plains, Cheyenne, just to name a few!!

I highly recommend this book as does my son!!
