Book Description

November 1, 1971 Bison Book

Originally published in 1904, Indian Fights and Fighters regularly appears in bibliographies of significant works on the history of the American West. Embracing almost three decades of Plains history, it contains not only Brady's clear, fast-paced accounts of the Plains wars, but also a number of eyewitness accounts, most of which were written especially for him and which are almost impossible to find elsewhere. The Powder River Expedition, the tragedy at Fort Phil Kearny, the Wagon Box Fight, the defense of Beecher's Island, the Fetterman Massacre, the battles of Washita and Summit Springs, and the campaigns of Crook, Custer, and Miles against the Sioux all are fully treated. The introduction by James T. King sketches Brady's career and evaluates his sources.

5.0 out of 5 stars first hand historical accounts, February 18, 1997

This review is from: Indian Fights and Fighters (Bison Book) (Paperback)
Mr. Brady takes you into the west during a time when the Native Americans were making their last stand. His exhaustive journalistic studies have given us a timeless account of what it was like to both be a Native American and a Calvary fighter during the 1870's.

Although Mr. Brady attempts to take an objective view of both sides, he is biased towards the Calvary and one cannot help but to ponder the Native Americans view point as they struggle for their freedom aganist unbeatable odds.

I would recommend this book to anyone! I particulary enjoy reading historical accounts and this is one of the best I have ever read.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books ever about the Sioux Wars, June 12, 2010
By
The author's book is required reading for any student of the battles the U.S. cavalry had against the Sioux and Cheyennes from 1866 to 1877. All of the engagements are studied in detail and Brady had the great fortune to get first-hand accounts of the fighting from soldiers in the field during those hostilities. Brady's work is a pleasant read with a swift narrative and the love of his work is present on every page. The tone of Brady's book seems to suggests sympathy for the Indian plight because of the U.S. government's unfair posture that backed the Sioux and Cheyenne into a corner with no choice but to defend their homeland and hunting grounds. However, Brady is writing history from the white man's point of view and his bias creeps into his book on occasion. There are several pages of interesting correspondence between Brady and officers of the Seventh Cavalry regarding Custer's orders from General Terry and the letter and spirit of those orders. Great history and writing from the Reverend Brady.
