Slim Whitman was born in 1924 in Florida and is still performing.He has one of the most distinctive voices in both Country as well as Folk Music.
He reminds one somewhat of Jim Reeves or even Freddy Fender;but really, no other singer is anything like him.He is one of the best selling and most influential artists in Country Music history;yet at the same time one of the most underrecognized by the American public at large.He is even more famous in Europe.He served in the US Navy in WWII where he learned to play the guitar.
This is an excellent compliation of 25 of his great songs.Much of his music is accompanied by Steel Guitar and when you hear him singing;you have to believe his voice and the steel guitar were made for each other.Then add in his yodelling and what a combination you get.Few if any can compare with his masterful talent as a yodeller.

I have been a fan of his for many,many years.I wasn't sure if he was still performing,so I looked him up on the "net" and was pleasantly surprised to find that he was still at it.I also found that there was a video of his on You Tube,singing his Indian Love Call. Then ;I was in for an even greater surprise,there was also a video of him singing "Danny Boy" I had not even known that he recorded that song---and what a terrific rendition he does.Now what an even greater treat was in store, when I found other versions to that song."Danny Boy" is arguably the world's most popular and best loved song---and it is my favorite!!
So,here on YouTube I also found full length video and song versions of "Danny Boy" by Hank Locklin,Jim Reeves,Johnny Cash,Cher(a wonderful version),Eva Cassidy,Eric Clapton,Davy Spillane & Sinead O'Connor (with excellent murals of Belfast),Candice Jarrett,Narvel Felts,Joe Dolan,Andy Williams,and a version by Roy Orbison that is nothing short of spellbinding.
So,there you go.I started to check on the status of Slim Whitman and ended up being treated to a whole lot of simply wonderful versions of my favourite song,"Danny Boy". If you are as taken by this song as much as I am;I can only suggest you check it out on You Tube---you'll be in for a treat!!! ---starting of with Slim's version;of course.!!
