Book Description

January 2001 1571685081 978-1571685087 1st
This is the story of the leadership, organization, campaigns undertaken, tactics and strategy employed in Mexican Texas by Stephen F. Austin's militia against hostile Indians and others from 1822 to 1835. It is a story central to the survival and eventual success of the first Anglo-American colony in Texas. Dr. Gregg Cantrell, biographer of Stephen F. Austin, in a Foreword written for the book, says that, "It is a story worth telling". He also confirms that, "More than just a factual account of the Indian wars, this book will leave the reader with a better understanding of how American frontiersmen responded to a harsh environment and foreign cultures. In doing so our picture of Western and Texas history grows more complete".

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

The militia in Stephen F. Austin's colony in Mexican Texas has recieved very little attention. In addition, I found that the reasons for the militias success in routing a number of hostile Indian tribes in an area where Spanish and Tejano settlers had never been able to survive, much less prosper, had seldom been questioned. To look closer at those events was the main purpose in writing the book. However, while writing I found that there were serious problems with the common wisdom regarding the first company of "Texas Rangers" operating in Austin's colony in 1823. As a result, this possibility was examined and found to be another myth, that many serious students of Texas history had never been comfortable with. The evidence I found against those rangers operating in Mexican Texas is overwhelming and because it effects the basic concept and history of Austin's militia, it is included in my book as an interesting, but minor sub-plot. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author

I was born in San Antonio, Texas, hold a BS and MS in Geology and have worked for many years in the international petroleum and minerals industries. I have written numerous articles and three books on very different subjects. All of these books, however, look at subjects that had not been examined closely. Which goes to prove that there is still plenty of room for good research to bring to life fascinating stories about true historical events. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Texas Ranger Origins, April 20, 2001

This review is from: The Indian Wars in Stephen F. Austin's Texas Colony, 1822-1835 (Paperback)
Allen Hatley has done all Texas Ranger researchers a favor by helping explain the origin of this organization. Like most Ranger researchers, I have considered 1823 as the date for the formation of the forerunners of this organization. Unlike most researchers, I have put faith in this date because I am a Tumlinson descendant and have wanted to claim them as the first Texas Rangers. Hatley gives good evidence that this is not true. While that is disappointing, personally, the truth is better than a tale.

The book contains other important information on Austin's Colony which is enlightening. The book is concise, readable, and factual.

Excellent work from this emerging author/historian.
