This book is insightful, inspiring and an wonderful look at a time period not that long ago with a very different way of life. The author is speaking from first hand experience which really added some weight to each of the stories. I have now read the book about 12 times through. I highly recommend it!

This book written by Cheff in 1993 is a good book of stories if you are interested in early years growing up in Montana. I am familiar with the area spoken about in the book so it is of high interest to me. The Bob Marshall Wilderness area is talked about along with the Mission Mountains. This is a book you could read stories out of to your children or Grand Children. Also you learn much about how things were accomplished in the early 1900s. Find a copy to purchase and read, you wom't be disapointed.

i feel very lucky to have stumbled across this book, it is my all time favorite and i read a lot. i never like it when people tell me they should write a book about thier lives because everybody says it as if thier lives are more interesting than the rest ...but i read this and was so thankful that this man did just that. with his little snippets of memories growing up in montana, he took me to a different time ...a different way of thinking that i personally long for. it really wasn't that long ago but the world was so different then. he talk about going on hunting parties with full-blooded natives and about trying to get home from school in blizzards and moonshining as a youth for movie money. it's a very wonderful book and i can't thank bud enough for writing it. his family must be very happy to have it too.
