The book written by an Indiana University professor reveals great depth of knowledge about Indiana's history. I found the book well written and informative.

By David Parrott on May 31, 2009
Format: Paperback
This book is both a pleasure to read and comprehensive as a primer on Indiana history. Peckham proves himself to be both a capable historian and a capable popularizer. While Peckham demonstrates an awareness of the cultural and political patterns in Indiana's different regions, and the demographic origins of those patterns, he betrays a very obvious bias which rises to the point of unfairness in his coverage of the Civil War.

He doesn't allow the reader to recognize that the citizens of Indiana and its legislature were largely sympathetic with secession and uniformly wary of Blacks as either slaves or citizens. What you receive from this book is an inappropriate romanticism about Gov. Morton. His failure to properly summarize his persecution of opponents and disregard for the will of the people goes beyond the license due to popular historians and into the realm of outright distortion.
