More About the Author

Ellen Weiss has lost count of how many kids' books she's written, that's how long she's been doing it. There are probably over 200, from board books to chapter books to middle-grade novels, fiction and nonfiction, silly and serious. They have won many awards, and have been adapted into a Disney TV movie and a BBC radio play. Two of them, THE TAMING OF LOLA and PORKY AND BESS, were named Bank Street Best Books of 2010. She loves to collaborate, and she often writes with her husband, Mel Friedman. She also loves to rescue stray dogs, but she had to stop when the aforementioned Mel Friedman told her he would divorce her if she brought home one more filthy, un-housebroken, weird mutt.

4.0 out of 5 stars Above average gamebook, June 29, 2011

This review is from: Indiana Jones & the Gold of Genghis Khan (Find Your Fate, No 9) (Mass Market Paperback)
* CHARACTERS:
Characters are decently established. The name "Mr. Snake" was lame though.

* ARTWORK:
Above average quality as usual for this series.

* STORY:
The story is above average. It is better than "Cup of the Vampire," but not as good as "Eye of the Fates." The only real problem is the pursuit of treasure - there isn't much of a sense of urgency pursuing treasure compared to say, finding the lost Ark, Eye of Fates, etc. I do with the storyline with exploring the dungeon was more developed, but compared to the garbage R.L. Stine wrote, this book is a gem.

* AUTHOR'S WRITING STYLE:
The writing style is above average, with good use of subtlety and building of suspense.

* GAMEBOOK DESIGN
As a gamebook, many of the choices made you pause and think about which is the best choice to make. Some of the choices were lame in the respect that it was a do it or chicken out choice, but it is easily made up for by the excellent choices. The difficulty in making a decision was similar to Carol Gaskin's "Master of Mazes" and "The Magician's Ring."

One problem was that some of the choices went to the next page. It's difficult to avoid the temptation of reading the next page instead of actually choosing the choice you want to.

* CONCLUSION:
An above average gamebook, and clearly one of the better books of this series.
