4.0 out of 5 stars Delightful, May 9, 2008
This review is from: The Indiana Jones Handbook (Hardcover)
Here's your How To book for becoming a globe trotting adventurer seeking out archeological artifacts ala Indiana Jones. It's a quaint and humorfilled hardbound book that is put together well, has classic stills from the movies, and plenty of 'how to' tidbits. You'll learn how to crack a bullwhip, pass under a speeding truck, deal with booby traps, and even escape the Wrath of God. Plentiful references to the trilogy are made and with the 4th movie coming out, this is pretty much a marketing ploy for it although nothing from the upcoming movie is contained within this text. It looks great, it makes you want to re-watch the movies, and you'll read it in a day or two.

Why didn't this book get 5 stars?... in my opinion, it's simply overpriced to buy it new at nearly $20 for a 175 page 5x7 book. The text per page is pretty minimal as the graphic layout fills quite a bit of the page. Absolutely worth having but it really shouldn't cost this much.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Fun, April 22, 2008
This review is from: The Indiana Jones Handbook (Hardcover)
This book is just like all of the other film or genre inspired guides. It is funny no matter who reads it but if you are a big fan of the film as in this case the book is so much funnier. There are a lot of little references to the original trilogy that you would only catch being an avid lover of the films. And to my own surprise there are quite a few hints to the plot of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull which were very surprising and quite frankly caught me off guard. But regardless of the reader it is guarenteed a good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars "The Indiana Jones Handbook" Solves Your Adventurer Dilemmas, April 10, 2008

This review is from: The Indiana Jones Handbook (Hardcover)
How many times have you stopped dead in your tracks trying desperately not to set off all the booby traps hidden in your path? Or let's say you're face-to-face with a gang of swordsmen and you're just not sure how to fight with minimal stabbing injuries? Maybe you're trapped in an ancient Egyptian tomb and if you could only decipher the hieroglyphs, surely you'd find the exit!

Lucky for you and other would-be adventurers there's The Indiana Jones Handbook: The Complete Adventurer's Guide written by Denise Kiernan and Joseph D'Agnese from Quirk Books.

This is your ultimate guide to learn handy information like how to do everything you've seen Indiana Jones do and more on his epic adventures. Learn how to properly ride an elephant, identify secret passageways, how to handle awkward foods, pack for an expedition, and how to escape if you're accidentally entombed.

Timed to coincide with the movie release of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, this handbook has step-by-step instructions, helpful diagrams and full-color photography from all of the Indiana Jones films. The handy guide also includes fun sidebars about Dr. Jones' experiences from the films and real-life tidbits about archaeology.

The book is broken down into various chapters to help you find answers to your most pending adventurer questions. If you need to quickly survive being poisoned or perhaps brush up on bullwhip basics, go to Chapter 1: Expedition Essentials. Get a few pointers on how to run on top of a moving train or escape quicksand in Chapter 2: Getting Around. Chapter 3: People Skills comes in handy when you've been tied up or need to win a fistfight. Handle tarantulas, snakes and rats like a pro thanks to Chapter 4: The Animal Kingdom. For the beginner archaeologist Chapter 5: On-site Skills has useful information on how to locate a lost site and then excavate it. Break a zombie curse and escape the wrath of God thanks to Chapter 6: Supernatural Skills.

There's plenty to learn from The Indiana Jones Handbook, but here's my Top 5 List of the Coolest Tidbits Worthy of Memorization.

1. If your hands are tied behind you, bring your knees to your chest and work your hands under your bottom and over the tops of your knees. Then work the knots with your teeth.

2. To make that cool bullwhip crack motion just like Indy, begin with the whip down at your side. Raise the whip overhead in a circular motion. Bring the whip forward and snap your wrist.

3. If bitten by a poisonous snake, wash the area with soap and water. Keep the area immobile and stop the venom from spreading by wrapping the area several inches above the bite to slow the spread. But do not cut off the circulation or apply a tourniquet. Do not apply ice. Sucking and spitting out the venom is rarely effective.

4. Before you ride an elephant you should remove your shoes. Riding an elephant barefoot shows respect for the deity but also allows you to tread more gently upon the elephant's skin and grip it with your toes.

5. Resist the urge to destroy your own voodoo doll. Simply pack it carefully in a sack with sand to cushion it for the journey home, and get it back to the lab for analysis. Pack needles separately.

Read and learn!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Fun for all ages, for fans and Indy novices, August 8, 2009
This review is from: The Indiana Jones Handbook (Hardcover)
An enjoyable fun book to read, interesting titbits of information, and humour. This book would be suitable for the most die hard Indy fan, and a wonderful introduction to an Indiana Jones novice.

For parents too with inquisitive youngsters who are full of questions about the real and imaginary, some basic answers suitable for a young child can be found in this little book "How does he get on the elephants back"? grabbing your trusty book "Well Junior".

While based on the adventures of an adventure hero the book does emphasise the correct archaelogical method, and emphasises preserve not destroy.

Well worth reading just for the fun.

This is a blast of a book. Packed with fun, funny, and very useful info for fans and non-fans alike... Wanna know how to ride an elephant? It's here. How to break a zombie curse? Check. How to survive while clinging to a submarine's telescope? Got it. And my personal favorite: How to escape the wrath of God.

Kids and adults will love it. The writing is lively and the photos and diagrams are often hilarious.

Kudos to the writing team of Kiernan and D'Agnese.

4.0 out of 5 stars I can't think of a better role model for a kid than Indy., February 7, 2010
This review is from: The Indiana Jones Handbook (Hardcover)
My son got this book and a few others as a Christmas gift from his best friend. The boys had decided to gift books to each other this year so they could introduce each other to different books. This is an A++++ recommendation for all age groups. It truly reads as a handbook should. You can learn How to: Use a bullwhip, escape the wrath of God, how to slide underneath a moving truck, and many many more. There are specific instructions as well as images, photo's and drawings. It really is a lit of fun for kids to learn how to do all the unbelievable things Indy does. The two boys have even sat together and gone through it together so they can teach wach other Indy's cool moves.
