More About the Author

Max McCoy is an award-winning novelist and journalist. He is best known for his westerns (which have been described as "western noir") and his original Indiana Jones adventures.

He won the Spur award in 2008 from the Western Writers of America for his novel, "Hellfire Canyon." It's the story of a 13-year-old boy and his mother who walk across Missouri during the Civil War and become part of the gang led by Alf Bolin, the notorious Ozark serial killer. "Hellfire Canyon" was also named a Kansas 2008 Notable Book.

McCoy is the author of sixteen other books, including four original Indiana Jones adventures for LucasFilm and the novelization of Steven Spielberg's epic miniseries, "Into the West."

His fiction debut, "The Sixth Rider," about the 1892 raid on Coffeyville's banks by the Dalton Gang, was published by Doubleday and won the Spur/Medicine Pipe Award for Best First Novel by the Western Writers of America.

USA Today has described his writing as "powerful." In addition to westerns and historical fiction, McCoy also writes contemporary adventures. Publishers Weekly called his novel, "The Moon Pool," an "intelligent thriller... tightly drawn characters, a vile villain and a satisfying, thought-provoking conclusion make this a compelling read."

McCoy grew up in Baxter Springs and most of his books are set in Kansas or Missouri. He began his career in journalism at the Pittsburg Morning Sun and writing for pulp magazines such as True Detective and Front-Page Detective. Most recently, he was the investigative writer for The Joplin Globe. He has won first-place awards in investigative journalism for his stories on serial killers and hate groups.

His latest book is "Canyon Diablo," a sequel to "Hellfire Canyon." McCoy's an assistant professor of journalism at Emporia State University. His newest book, "Damnation Road, will be released in September 2010.

5.0 out of 5 stars This was a GREAT book!, January 3, 2001
A Kid's Review
I really liked this book. It was the first one I read, and, if I could go back and do it again, I would read "Indiana Jones and the Philosopher's Stone" first, becuase I am reading that one now. Unfortunatley I already know what becomes of the leading lady. I was happy to find out that I could still read about Indy, even after I'd seen the movies! It seemed a little out of place, though. Most of his adventures are in warm places, but this one was set in the Artic! Brr!

5.0 out of 5 stars Still refreshing after that bloody martin cadin, October 25, 1998
By A Customer
Yet another great book by Max McCoy. He recaptures the essence of Indidana Jones after it was so badly tarnished by Martin Cadins spy-novel versions of Indidan Jones. These get back to the fighting, and danger that we so love about Indy. More problems with women of course (true to life as always) and as good as ever. I am waiting anciously for the next book (and a spell checker ;-) ) Read this book its bloodycool.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting Action Packed Adventure! And the Hollow Earth!, July 6, 1997
By A Customer
Vril, Nazis, Zeppelins, Amundsen, the Hollow Earth - this adventure packed thriller has it all! Max McCoy possesses that subtle genius for projecting the reader into the center of the adventure matrix as he handles an historically controversial subject creatively echoing Burrough's Inner Earth adventure genre series.

We join Indiana as he is stalked by Nazis occultists for the coveted "Vril crystal", left in Indi's safe keeping by his friend and associate E. B. Baldwin, as we trek into the Arctic wasteland and into the deep unknown. Technically brilliant crafted descriptions, McCoy's "Indiana Jones and the Hollow Earth" executes a series of perfectly timed sequences leading us to the door step of the mythical Ultima Thule. Cleverly fused in an orchestrated dialogue of dead pan one liners, Indiana and the adventuress Ulla, push their way up over the rim and through the incomprehensible opening into the Hollow Earth. There we are introduced to a very unique formula to the never dying quest for the understanding of the dynamics of the inner earth.

The combination of Indiana Jones, sinister Nazis, and the Hollow Earth, creates a novel that is irresistible to the adventure and paranormal reader.
