4.0 out of 5 stars A decent adaptation
It is a common secret, I believe, that film-to-comic adaptations are shallow in ways of storytelling but in the artwork field things are completing different. 1.0 out of 5 stars My 5-yr-old is right: "BO-O-ORING!!"
I'm a 40-year-old Indy diehard. My son is a 5-year-old Indy diehard. And the comic book adaptation of the new KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL film satisfied neither of us. Awkward and intrusive narrative exposition, a lazy disinterest (it would seem) in graphically depicting the movie's extended action set pieces (in favor of endless talk-talk-talking heads) and erratic art,...

It is a common secret, I believe, that film-to-comic adaptations are shallow in ways of storytelling but in the artwork field things are completing different. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is a fine example of such. The artwork and the likeness to all the characters is really excellent, nothing like the old Raiders of the Lost Ark adaptation done some 30 years ago, but when it comes to storytelling things get a bit poor. Perhaps, it has to do with the limited time given to artists to explore the stories before the films gets released.

Still, Kingdom's adaptation isn't lacking anything from other adaptations around and it's not only for hardcore Indy fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Graphic Crystal is GOLDEN, May 25, 2008
This review is from: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (Paperback)
If you are seeking high adventure and thrills, Its name is Indiana Jones..so seek the film first and then seek out THIS graphic novel

After having seen Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Saturday, I headed to my local comic shop just after the film finished and picked up this graphic novel. It was the last copy of any indiana Jones comic of the movie that the shop had until next week's reorder. In reading it, the comic indy brought across the film indy is only a way a comic adaptation can do.

Now you must understand, this is a graphic novel (reprinting issue one and two of the comic) in one single square, soft bound book. Note most of the film dialog is intact in the comic itself. You are not going to get every single scene nor dialog you see in the movie...as most comic movie adaptation. The comic capture the flavor of the film without all of its many special effects. This is a great collectable to remember the movie by, at least until this November..when this film hits DVD.

The graphic novel's art is eye popping...it is more than you expect with a graphic novel. BUT this comic is from Dark Horse, who also does film and TV adaptation of such licensed products like Angel, Lost in Space, Aliens, Star Wars, The Incredibles and many others, so this piece holds up as a great storytelling. If you like this book, try Indiana Jones Omnibus, Vol. 1 or Indiana Jones Adventures Volume 1

It is a shame no one took a risk to adapt Speed Racer, Iron Man or Kung Fu Pandy to a graphic novel format

So is this graphic novel of Crystal Skull worth it? YOU BET YOUR BULLWHIP IT IS! Go to the movie, then grap this graphic novel

Awkward and intrusive narrative exposition, a lazy disinterest (it would seem) in graphically depicting the movie's extended action set pieces (in favor of endless talk-talk-talking heads) and erratic art, especially in the depiction of Harrison Ford's grizzled mug... These are not the hallmarks of the great movie-to-comic adaptations I expect from the Lucasfilm camp. This one's a real stinker. A shame. Back to the movies we go.

I felt that this was an OK book for the movie. I am a huge fan of Indy, and I realize that the Crystal Skull movie not the best of the Indy movies, but the drawling in this book is not the greatest in some parts.

The book follows the movie in general, character lines, details and certain situations aren't the same as in the movie.
The book is drawn very nicely and only a nitpicker will make a problem of the differences between movie and book but that doesn't matter. It's a great read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!, May 22, 2008
This review is from: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (Paperback)
I had the incredible luck to have read this before it hit the shelves thanks to my job. It only took me a half hour to read the comic (my lunch break), but I could've spent hours pouring over the pages. Since everyone knows what this is about, I'm not going to waste my time talking about the plotline.

The artwork is pretty nice for a movie to comic adaptation & the artists really do try to keep the characters looking as close to their real counterparts as possible (although they do smooth out age lines & such). The pacing of the book is also nice, although at one or two points I did feel as if the plot felt a little rushed & that elements felt left out. Then again, this is usually the case with most plots that are transferred from the big screen to the comic book usually have this problem. (There's only so much you can translate without deviating from the source.)

Even so, this was a very good comic & one that would probably sell even if it wasn't a movie tie in. Would I say this about it even if it wasn't an Indiana comic? Maybe, maybe not, but it is what it is. And what this comic is is a pretty darn good ride. It won't replace the movie, but it's not supposed to.

Would I recommend this to a friend? You bet the farm I would. I'm an Indy fan to the bone & I believe that the only people who don't like the movies are ones who haven't seen them or just don't like action films in general. (Even the ones who are lukewarm still "like" the films.)
