I have been going to Indianapolis for over 40 years and yet this book was fascinating. It is a book about the Speedway and the people who built it and its history. It is a very easy read and would be interesting to anyone who knows of the Indianapolis 500. If you want a book about the Indianapolis 500, this is not the book, however if you want a book about the Indianapolis motor speedway, this is it.

This title is an excellent written and photographic record of the history of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Having grown up in Indianapolis, and being a lifetime racing fan, I found the book fascinating! I especially enjoyed reading the actual letters from the brick company communicating to the track owner all the business deals of the purchasing and installation of all the bricks that became the track surface.
The Speedway is an icon, and a monument to automotive racing history. The facilities has a "presence" like no other track. A book cannot fully portray that. One must experience it in person, but this book does an excellent job and comes very close!

This book was a gift for a 100 percent 500 race fan of over 40 years. He was and is completely thrilled with the gift, the great pictures and text. He's so familiar with the ins and outs of the content and can continually make personal connections to his presence at the track, the records of the drivers and the 'specials' that each year's racing recorded. The book arrived in excellent condition. It a fabulous coffee table book and a must for the 500 race fans, young and old.

My husband LOVES to read about racing legends. We own quite a few of Ralph Kramer books. They are all purchased from the internet. Wonderful information and extremely affordable. this book was used and the seller took a lot of care in it's packaging, It was wrapped with bubble wrap and very secure. I was impressed the book was under $15 dollars.

The book starts off good, but then starts to jumble the early races with newer ones in the narration. Also it seems to be disorganized. For example the narration seems to follow the timeline of IMS, but in chapter 6 there is a section that talks about the festivals and parade that starts in the year 1957.So why is that place right after the history of the 1915 race? Also it's got editorial errors, for example: on page 85 of my book it ends with a sentence "it was a stroke of genius, Steve and Carl shared a" On the next page it goes to a whole new chapter called Blame it on the Radio. So maybe I got a flawed book can anyone give me some feedback?

Officially licensed in cooperation with the Indy Motor Speedway is this fine history of the most famous racing venue in the world. It began as a cornfield and pasture and evolved into a fine racing track with world fame: here Ralph Ramer covers the entire history of the track, from the early balloon races and motorcycle races to today's top-league car racing teams. History comes alive through an excellent blend of vintage black and white and color photos throughout. Any library strong in race car history will find it a winning acquisition.
