Most Helpful Customer Reviews

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful By T. R. Santhanakrishnan on December 15, 2007
Format: Hardcover
Major General V K Singh disappoints in this book.

He is rightly offended by the corruption , nepotism and factionalism in a Government of India arm that is kept out of public scrutiny ostensibly for strategic reasons and is on occasions used by self serving bureaucrats for their personal purposes.

However, his book is a laundry list of "dirty linen". Apart from putting to shame the offenders (which is not a bad objective really), the book does not provide any "secret" of the RAW or an insight into "India's external intelligence" as the cover claims. Waste of time. Funny the Government should waste time and tax payers' money in attempting to remove this book from the shelves!

The book does not bring out the stellar role played by RAW in preserving the territorial integrity of India (Nagaland in the fifties, Mizoram in the seventies, Punjab in the eighties and Kashmir now) and serving the geopolitical interests of India (covert action capabilities that created Bangladesh and covert action capabilities in the Afghanistan/Pakistan border and in Pakistan). The book does not bring out the challenges India facesin organizing its intelligence network (external plays, internal plays, using people, using technology, working with the Ministry of foreign affairs and its diplomats, working with others' diplomats in India) surviving and steering through political power play in New Delhi, staying above suspicion in a democracy and staying away from being the whipping boy every time there is a failure.

The book only talks about the bureaucracy at the RAW organization. If that was the objective of the book, then it does a decent job. It should in that case have been titled `Bureaucracy at the RAW' not `Secrets of RAW'. There is no insight into any of the achievements of the RAW which I expected would form at least some part of the book.
