Book Description

December 4, 2001

Motivated by a longstanding interest in Aboriginal culture and a desire to contribute to the reconciliation process, Penny Tweedie spent a year travelling around Australia photographing and interviewing young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The result is Standing Strong, a dynamic and historic collection that celebrates the struggles and successes of young indigenous Australians.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians suffered a devastating blow with the coming of the Europeans. Against overwhelming odds and with remarkable resilience, they have not only maintained their presence but also make a significant contribution to all aspects of Australian society.

The seventy-seven participants in this book come from extremely diverse backgrounds, but are bonded by their culture and a desire to bring change to the way indigenous Australians are viewed and treated. Many are sceptical but remain determined to make sure their culture does not disappear.

With powerful simplicity, the interviews reveal the obstacles faced by indigenous people. Few remain untouched, either directly or indirectly, by the past policy of removing Aboriginal children from their families, and few have not had to contend with outright racism or, at best, negativity at some stage of their lives. These personal stories reveal a tenacity and optimism that is an inspiration to all.

In Standing Strong, young indigenous Australians have their say, breaking stereotypes and providing insight into what it means to be an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander today.

About the Author

Aboriginal people and their culture have been the focus of much of Penny Tweedie's photography during the last twenty years. In 1975 she photographed Prime Minister Gough Whitlam handing back the land to Vincent Lingiari at Wattie Creek in the Northern Territory to celebrate the first successful Aboriginal land claim. In 1980, after several years living and working closely with Aboriginal families and communities in Arnhem Land, National Geographic magazine published her story on their enduring traditional culture and customs, which she followed with a book This is My Country: A View of Arnhem Land, in 1985. Tweedie's most recent book, Spirit of Arnhem Land, was published to international acclaim, photographs from which won the Walkley Award for feature photography in 1999.

Tweedie has worked on assignments for major magazines and publications including National Geographic, Newsweek, Time Magazine and the Sunday Times, and non-government organisations such as Save the Children and Oxfam. Assignments have taken her to over sixty countries where she has photographed war, famine, historical and political events, and people and the environment.

Tweedie has a son at university and works from Australia and the UK.

Her commitment, drive and involvement with my people has contributed to significant changes in the way in which the wider community perceives Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians today.
