4.0 out of 5 stars Indigenous and Contemporary January 11, 2010
Format:Audio CD
"Indiginary" is a word coined by Ward Jene Stroud meaning the combination of indigenous and contemporary. Thus, the CD "Indiginary" is a blend of indigenous and contemporary musical instruments performed in original compositions written by Stroud. "Indiginary" was conceived by Stroud as a way of honoring the similarities that lie within us. He writes in the CD liner notes that, "It says a lot about our society that we are making more of an effort to understand each other's differences better. My message is that is also very important that we honor our `Cultural Similarities' too! There are far more things that we share as human beings than differences between us! Biology, form, ceremony, speech, song, dance, not to mention other things like loving, laughing, hurting, joy, sorrow, hoping crying, and the other bazillion little things that make us human."

The list of indigenous instruments on "Indiginary" includes shakuhachi flute from Japan, djembe drums, African thumb piano (kalimba), hammered dulcimer, South American panpipes, and didgeridoo. Both full-sized Native American flutes and smaller spirit flutes are used. Some tracks draw solely upon these traditional instruments, while others add synthesizer and acoustic and electric guitars. One track uses breath as a rhythm instrument. While a careful listening to this CD reveals that the instrumentation is predominately indigenous, the use of synthesizer and electric guitar gives the music a distinctly contemporary feeling. This mixture of instruments yields a sound that is soothing and relaxing with roots that are planted deep within indigenous cultures.

"Indiginary" is quiet music. It takes the listener to the inside where deeper realities are found.
