Book Description

Indigo Animal June 15, 1999
If you were to hear Indigo Animal read aloud without revealing the accompanying black and white drawings, you would find a droll and engaging narrative describing the experiences of one creature, who seems to have many questions similar to our own, such as What am I doing here? And how can I have the best life I possibly can? This is a picture book for adults. It has a unique and subtle sense of humor that slowly emerges as the pictures-one on each page-blend with the narrative to produce a refreshing and insightful experience.

Indigo Animal evolves from being a shy animal with a vague and unexplored attraction to a certain type of lawn ornament to become a determined and passionate student of aesthetics, form and beauty. Later, Indigo Animal "increasingly feels the impulse to explore streets that lie beyond the known territory" and on one of these forays discovers that an entire professional community of lawn statuary researchers already exists! Now Indigo is faced with a new set of challenges-but they are on an altogether different level than before.

Indigo Animal is thus a fable of hope for those who are seeking interesting new twists and turns in their lives-a path of ever-unfolding growth and interest.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"It's not enough to say that this book is a sheer delight. It exhibits a quality, extremely rare, that makes one smile and at the same time brings a very specific feeling of hope. One puts this book down feeling deeply thoughtful and happy at the same time. There are not many things that do that for us." -- Jacob Needleman, author of Time and the Soul

From the Back Cover

Advance Praise for Indigo Animal "Serenely appreciating a good lawn ornament, rather than responding only to the visual chaos of media images bombarding our modern world, can mend the mind and activate a curious sense of purpose. Indigo Animal is convincing. (Dame Eleanor Marmot, Fountain Restorer to the Queen)

"Indigo Animal may change forever the way we view classical lawn statuary. Embedded within a deceptively simple narrative lies an invitation to include the observer in any aesthetic encounter. Read this book. You may never look at birdbaths the same way again. (Jean-Paul Varan, Author of Cement Sconce Contemplation in the Post-modern Era)

"Who was Indigo Animal before the fame, the adulation, the lecture tours? This stirring coming-of-age tale answers the question by exposing the early "Aha!" moments of this practical yet visionary lawn statuary researcher. I couldn't put it down." Orange Bearcat, Founding Director of Lawn Statuary Research Institute

5.0 out of 5 stars Indigo Animal is wonderful, April 19, 2000
This review is from: Indigo Animal (Paperback)
This book is wonderful. Every other thought contained within the Indigo Animal is profound; I had to make myself slow down to read it because there was so much information to gather from each little sentence. It really isn't a children's book, despite all the great pictures. Maybe you know this, but just in case. It's the story of an animal finding a community to help him explore. This is a great book to keep around the house for when you're feeling uninspired or blue. or indigo.
